I'm thinking of applying for summer (well, over December/January, so winter for you northern people) job. I'm a full time student, and 19, so it will be over the semester break.

I'm basically set on working some minimum wage retail job. The goal would be at an Apple store, because I have the most basic Apple certification (which the guys working at the store itself don't even seem to have, except for the tech support guys). Anything technology related would be preferred.

I can only work over Dec/Jan, and maybe late November. How do I communicate this as accurately as possible? does it ward off potential employment (i.e would they rather choose someone who can work year-round)? How far in advance should I apply? And finally, could my age be a problem?

I'm hoping the Christmas rush will open up a lot more temporary vacancies, but this will be my first ever form of employment so I wouldn't know.

Didn't realize the board was this slow.

bumping in the hopes that someone out there has a lot of experience in situations similar to mine.

1) age will not be a problem, but don't put it on your resume
2) apply when you see vacancies on the website
3) you don't communicate it at all. you get a job there, then you quit when ready. at no point should they be aware you are only working there temporarily. they are a multi-national multi-billion dollar company, and you will not hurt their feelings.

Thanks for the advice.

I should have mentioned Apple doesn't have an official presence here so the "Apple Stores" are run through a subcontractor. They don't post vacancies on the site, just a page where you upload your CV with details and a cover letter. You don't even get to specify what store or even general area you are applying for.

Really interesting regarding point 3. I would have thought that there are different legal requirements for someone working full time but only temporarily. Now that I think about it it makes perfect sense though.

Again, thanks for the advice.
