Old thread dead.
Have you bought or sold anything recently?
Are you planing on on entering into a position or leaving one? Why?
Are you in the green or red?
Do you have any obligation to answer these questions? No.
Am I asking questions to inflate the size of the OP? Yes.
And keep your eye on the Aerospace and Defense sector if you aren't already, because the Farnborough Airshow is this week.

Anon posted some links last thread so I'll put them here because why not.

I'm currently AAPL Aug 01 '14 $95 Call

It's up 26% today. I'm trying to gauge the max price of this option. From what I understand option price is set by speculation and from where I'm sitting there are two factors today:
1) Barclay's upgrade of the stock
2) Upcoming QE report
Not sure how far to ride either. QE profits especially are baked in so speculation decreases as it comes nearer but I don't think I've seen it's full play. I think I've seen Barclay's influence today though.

A piece of me is saying dump it tomorrow when it starts leveling out/pulling back. I think there will be some pretty heavy trading early in the day and pull back when the day traders have made their IBM news money. Then on Thursday sell an OTM call. Those can be pretty safe bets for a little quick cash. Then wait for a pull back to enter a new long call. Days like today devalue an option like mine by 13%, I'll take the rebound on that any week.

Waiting for a better offer is like gambling on the LO/RAI buyout. Dat (LO) spike on Monday? Sure, someone knew it was happening. What they didn't know was what we now know: No e-cig monopoly, and the fact that they spun off Blu e-cigs before even inking the deal >implied enough regulatory risk that Tuesday's open at $63 (a $5 spread between the agreed price and the market price) was the result.

It's the market. Anything can happen at any time. That's what makes it fun.

Funny you should mention LO/RAI. I hold a ton of cigarette stocks including RAI and LO, of which LO is my single biggest position. I'm a former smoker, current vapor, and long term shareholder of both companies, I feel I'm uniquely qualified to comment on the deal.

I've been slowly riding up the gains since about $40. I bought these stocks expecting 4% dividends and 10% capital appreciation tops. Things started getting out of hand earlier this year as the buyout rumors swirled. People were expecting $72-$75 per share and some even called for $80+. Don't get me wrong, the ride up to $76 was nice. Ironic how we always remember our high water mark account balances.

This deal is months in the making. I'd wager the investment bankers were using year end 2013 figures and valuation multiples. The buyout premium has been realized as the rumor leaked. I believe the selling this week was from investors who bought at $60+ and were hoping for a deal in the $70's. They weren't willing to hold the stock for a year for a few % gain.

I also think the regulatory risk is over blown. All 4 companies involved clearly knew what they were doing divesting brands to Imperial. Imperial is the only tobacco stock I don't own because I don't want to pay $3 a month extra for pink sheet quotes. And they are never going ban menthol; the race card would get pulled so quickly. The deal will get regulatory approval.

I don't care much about big tobacco's ecig products. I'm looking at the annual report right now. Cigarettes generated $2 billion operating income on $6.7 billion sales. Ecigs generated no income on $230 million sales. Sure, it grew from $61 million, but who cares? I'll take cigarette profits now over potential ecig profits now. If you want ecig investments, go play with penny stocks.

>> No.414731

>>413788
>>414720
continuing...

I've never tried Blu, but I'm sure it sucks. All gas station ecigs do. Cigs are disposable, so the companies design their ecigs to be too. Its all they know. People who do stick with vaping will buy non-disposable models from independent internet retailers who import from China. The juice is a cottage industry itself. I prefer direct dripping the juice onto the atomizer instead of cartridges or tanks. Most people don't have the patience for this, and will revert back to cigs.

So, I've been buying more LO under $61. Looks like money on the table to me. Based on the .2909 exchange ratio, RAI would have to fall well below $40 to lose money buying LO at current prices. Once the deal close, I plan on holding my new RAI shares.

LO owners are still due a few dividend payments, and the best part is the price drop brought the yield back over 4%. LO is 95% institutionally owned. The institutions will vote yes. Retail traders can go whine for a better deal on seeking alpha or yahoo finance.

32 million shares traded the day the deal was announced. Vs about 2 million on an average day. Recent buyers were panic selling.

TLDR: The LO/RAI deal is going through and LO at $60 was a fucking gift from the financial gods

Thanks for the insights. Agreed on both your points, that most of the good news was priced in before the official announcement that talks were on (we're interested in the prices of stocks, but M&A people haggle over the value of businesses, and we're all just trying to play catch-up with them), and that the deal most likely goes through, especially after the past few few days in which, no matter how the broader markets were whipsawed by macro events, the spread between the current price of LO/RAI and the price implied by $50.50 + 0.2909 RAI has narrowed. Great lesson in how long it takes a big/deep/liquid market to price in risk and and slowly price it back out as participants realize it's not quite as risky as it first seemed.

Traded with Schwab for years and am happy with their service, both web-based and the StreetSmart platform.

If commissions matter, consider IB.

If you're not daytrading, it probably doesn't matter; all the big-name discount brokers are pretty good.

Cool Schwabbie Bro: What sealed it for me was a fucked-up situation with an options trade on expiry day - the tl;dr is that my options expired worthless, and there was a court decision due 30 minutes after the close of trading on expiration Friday that might have made them worth a lot. One phone call, rep picked up on third ring, and the phone rep was willing to just sit there and wait on the phone with me for 3-4 minutes for the news to come out. "HELL YES I want to exercise!" (and "Yes, absolutely, I know that I could lose money by doing this and that I'm stuck with umpteenthousand shares of XYZ on Monday morning etc.") Schwab dude seemed as excited and happy for me as we walked through the legal disclaimers around contrary exercise as I was. Nice company. If held in a taxable account, wait until the last minute in 2015 to file your 2014 taxes, even if you sell the BX before the end of the year. It is likely that you will get a K-1 for the income (and gains and losses!) that the partnership incurred while you held it. It's because revenue did not increase as much as predicted yoy.

However they have a production backlog of more than $550billion so I am considering entering a position with them.

Fucking mobile adverts mate.

>> No.420469

So, GoPro got it's quarterly report on the 31st, it went down 3.16% today, what do y'all think, buy stock now or later?
Or not at all?

i know right, 5% up now.

GoPro not sure how it could fare, IV is crazy on the Aug01 but straddle is worth around 5,1 might be worth it to give it a shot tho you can wait it out a buy it on the 31st since the report is after market close.

I think that's what I'll end up doing, yeah. Maybe buy earlier it if they keep going down over the next couple of days.
