Be yourself op. That's a better goal than most of the clowns on this board.

Instead of going for a degree that will make you a lot of money, go into something that will make you happy in the long run. Just don't get a liberal art degree, its the same as not going to school at all.

The subjects i’m interested in do not pay well in most associated careers, though

This. Thankful a relative died and left me enough money to pay off all the debt.

I'll tell you this as someone who had the same goal in mind. I ended up switching from biochem to cs last year of school. Just be warned, dental school is no joke. It's grueling and your usually there from 8am till 7-10pm at night everyday. Plus exams every single week in multiple subject. 4 years of pure suffering, and a hug amount of debt as well. Orthodontics requires more schooling as well since it's a specialized field, so abut 6 years of schooling plus a year of residency. For orthodontics to be accepted, you have to be at the absolute top of your dental school class to be accepted into orthodontic training as well.

And to top it all off your going to be about 250-300k in debt. So your going to be around 32 years old before you make any real money. Ask yourself if it's really worth all the time, money, and dedication required to do this.

My dads an endodontist, not ortho, because he couldn't make the cut. he said dental school were the worst years of his life.

If you have a real passion for dentistry and those related subjects then go for it. If it's just for the money like I was doing, then it's not worth sacrificing your prime of your life suffering in school.

Look OP, if you like working with teeth that's good enough, but I will give you this little deal of insight
My aunt worked as a dental hygienist for many many years (still does) and although perhaps it's different when you own the business, she said that if given the chance she would not have chosen dental hygiene again

My good friend went to school to be a dental hygienist because she thought it paid well. She worked for about a month part time at a clinic while keeping her full time medical receptionist job. She wasn't happy working on teeth so she said fuck it and quit. Moral of the story, don't chase money, chase happiness.

This. I'd go fucking nuts looking inside peoples' mouths all day. You couldn't pay me enough.

Hola.
Talk to professionals in the field you are looking at entering. See if they have had job satisfaction. I'm not telling you not to do it, but dentists have the highest suicide rates among all doctors I'm pretty sure. A good paying job is great, make sure you'll want to live through it instead of choking down some shotgun slugs eh.
