Shipping Stocks Edition

Robinhood is a commission free stock trading app on iOS/Android

--Robinhood FAQs --
- VISIT THE WEBSITE FIRST DAMMIT!! - www.robinhood.com

> How is it free?
Robinhood earns revenue by collecting interest on the cash and securities in Robinhood accounts, much like a bank collects interest on cash deposits and by collecting fees from robinhood gold.

> It's been X days, why isn't my account verified yet?
Not being approved in 3 days seems to be the new norm. Nevertheless, call/email their support if you've been waiting more than that.

> When is it coming to my country?
The only "plans" are on an Australian and Chinese beta. Neither of which has gained much traction.

> I hit sell when the stock was X.XX, but it actually sold at a lower price, why?
Robinhood graphs are shit and only show you an average, not true real-time prices. To get Bid/Ask prices and important things like candlestick graphs, you should use a more robust platform.

> Where can I get better charting or bid/ask?
Real brokers, like TDAmeritrade's thinkorswim. Otherwise you should be using tradingview.com, stockcharts.com, finviz.com, or a non-pile-of-shit for your graphing in addition to Robinhood.

Do Interactive Brokers if possible. You gain access to a lot more exchanges. Their phone/chat support is really good too.

Questrade is fucking weak. QT's extended hours trading is shorter than most other's, and there's a chance that if you trade outside of hours, their system barfs and you can't cancel or modify your order. This is in QT's help section and is working as intended.

I've heard OK things about TD.

IB's platform is a bit confusing at first because you get an overwhelming number of options and data. It's pretty straightforward if you just want to trade in CAD, but you do have to buy USD in your account to trade US stocks. Totally worth it though if you pay attention to exchange rates.

If you want to buy stocks that are in Euros, Swedish Crowns, Yen, etc, then I think you buy USD first then buy the other. The exchange rates are really generous compared to Canadian banks though so don't sweat it.

So yeah, the platform is easy enough if you get used to swapping currencies. It has all the data you could want if you want to get fancier with it. I don't know anyone who has regrets with the platform.

The MoneyWeek videos on fundamentals are good. Forward contracts, commodities futures trading, and how a market works; these haven't really changed since the Amsterdam tulip bulb craze 400 years ago. The scope has changed (worldwide now) and it's electronic. The principals are the same.

I just recently finished the series on reading corporate financial statements. These haven't changed much in the last 100 years either. A cash-flow statement is still a cash-flow statement, and a balance sheet is still a balance sheet.

If you're retirement planning, yes it's worth it. I wouldn't trust a robo adviser. Find a good FA that will service your account at least 2 times a year or whenever you're freaking out (get those calls all the time), Vanguard funds are good from my experience, I also like some of Prudentials funds. A good FA will charge you between 0.5-2% on your assets and 5-20% on gains. I charge more on assets than on gains personally.

>>3569906
Who is servicing your account? What are your options? Make sure you're not paying a premium because the fund performed well just last year. There's a lot of factors to look at. There is high cap, low cap, medium cap, high growth, sp500 based, russell 2000 funds, etc etc. Depends on the client.

So either wait it out if you have the faith, or bail on it if you feel like you can do better before it'd be likely to pay what you'd want to see.

Right now, my long game is waiting for AAPL 130 to 132. All we need are more mediocre reviews and delays on the iPhone X's production to slap it around.

I'm going long with 15 shares of apple, waiting to break 160-65 whenever that happens.

Part of the 250 AMD I bought today was on margin, so I'm really not sure.
I don't think it will dip past 12.70ish. I'm hoping the kike whales let it break into the 14-15 trading range relatively soon (2-3 months?) It's been between 13-14 since february and I feel that it's artificially undervalued.

Please correct me if you disagree, eager to hear everyone's opinions.

Fundamentally, AMD really is not at a state to support its current value. If it were to spend more than three or four days above 14.50 in the next two months, don't be surprised to see a slurry of negative articles and price target downgrades. They're not a bad company by any means, but they're eternally second fiddle unless they can totally wrest control from the big boys of the semiconductor world.

See how many "meh" iPhone reviews there are and sales statistics, the same dumb money that would be "smart" enough to think, "Apple is low but I have faith! Time to buy the dip" will shit the bed on it going down 2.50 a share on a deep red down-market day and bail on it.

Slumps in a market like this aren't due to sell offs, it's lack of buying interest. Their iPhone presentation wasn't anything spectacular, but that isn't going to affect their sales in general. They own the American market share. People don't even see the $1000 price tag, everything is financed into phone contracts, rendering that null and void.

I don't like Apple. I hate that iPhone has a stranglehold. But it does, they have tons of free cash, and they are going to set new sales records and people know it so the run up isn't too far off. And no way it breaks 140.

If it got down to 130 I would be ecstatic but the market won't allow it.

All it will take are a few slips, a few chaotic market days, and it's going to be at a steep discount. I don't argue over their massive cock of commerce, just over the next few months of performance.

Unless Tim Cook teamed up with John Podesta for a pizza poz party, Apple will go up in time, all things being equal. I'm just thinking that there's more room south in the meantime to make other trades and see how it shakes out. It could hit around 148 and suddenly see an intraday high of 152 the next day, I'd say it's still jumping the gun to get in at that point. Let it settle out.

Good on ya and nice dubs2.

For any new people or people that are upset over a chunk of their portfolio being gone, my best advice is a hybrid between the "biggest loser" strategy and just following a field of moderate-volatility stocks and seeing which ones have had a fairly stable predictable trading range. I've always tried to go all in, get between 1-3%, and get the fuck out and see where my stable of stocks are to plan the next move. In the bull market we've been enjoying, you literally have zero excuse to be pulling in less than 20% annual returns unless you're just being a degenerate gambler

I got a newfag question: does the daytrading limit refer to the individual stocks or just a buy/sell in general? Like could I buy and sell 100 stocks in one day without having $25k and still be fine because it's actually just one purchase and one sale?

>>3576252

It just involves the ticker. You can buy 100, sell 50, sit on the other 50 and parcel them out for sale during the same day. You'd just get dinged for one day trade. ALWAYS keep your third daytrade free. You never know when, unfortunately, you'll need it to bail out of a sinking ship

For maximum fun and profit, you also need to keep in mind that stocks listed as high volatility will bind up your money when you trade them. Even not during a day trade. You'll get the warning after selling them and trying to buy another ticker that only a certain amount will be available for sale intraday; you can dodge the pattern day trader rule, but sometimes this deal with high volatility stocks will just ruin your day.

My rule of thumb is to never get into a position where a) PDT rules will fuck you, b) volatility limits will fuck you, and c) a known binary event will fuck you (i.e. potential delisting a la DCTH, Phase 2/3 drug trial results, merger deadlines a la RAD). Don't get put in a spot where your hands are tied, you can always cry about MUH MISSED GAINS but you'll be happy not to be stuck with a piece of shit that goes down 80%+ like CATB months ago or VSAR yesterday
