Bancor failed because they made their ICO literally uncapped, halfway through the ICO, and then extended it for a few more hours.

there's also the gwei setting which is slightly different but not all wallets let you change that

as a rule of thumb, 250k GAS / 50 GWEI will do you well during ICOs. but always read them because some block anything above a certain amount (not in the case of chainlink as far as a i know, so your problem wasn't gas being too high). make sure you have a bit of ETH left over in your wallet to cover the transaction.
