There's nothing I could tell you that won't be generic /biz/ advice.

Finance is about connections. You need to network like crazy.

If you've written programs that automate trading, especially ones that turn a profit, that will look very good. Write as many programs and algorithms as possible, and always learn from your mistakes. But don't churn out shit just to have something to show. If your strategy loses money, ask yourself why, and tweak it / start fresh with the new information.

I live in the 626 and I can't afford to live away from home. So a 2-hour/day driving round-trip is about my limit. I will apply to Berkely for fun however, but they require 3 years of high-school foreign language (I have only 2). I'll start taking Chinese classes at PCC in summer and if I do well, I'll continue for another semester (Berkeley only needs 2 semesters of college-level lang).

Can't afford USC but I'll look into it, along with UCLA. Is UCSD the other best state school for undergrad business? I'm not sure if a huge amount of debt from an expensive school is worth it, I am pretty much guaranteed a job after graduation.

No shit grades yet, I still have a 4.0 but I'm only halfway through community college.

>> No.317895

>>317885

Financial aid dude...UC's and USC are pretty generous with it.

You would be seriously short-changing yourself by going to Riverside or Irvine. These are bad schools that will leave you with a poor future and job prospects. Even taking any amount of debt to go to a school like UCLA is worth it for the dividends it will pay off in the future (look at the salary difference between UCLA grads and Riverside grads, for example).

Alright, I will certainly research it more. How low income does my parent need to be for me to get a decent amount of aid? My mom makes around 80k/ year but she doesn't save and doesn't spend on me. Might be able to convince her to spend on me for school reasons.

You have a point, but debt is abhorrent to me. I'll try and view student loans as an investment but that will take serious mental effort.

>> No.317928

>>317921

Take the college that's willing to pay the most for you. I passed up Indiana University even though they have a very prestigious biz program because it would've cost me easily over $120k in loans alone.

Kentucky is maybe going to cost me no more than $30k over 4 years and that's assuming I don't live frugal.

>> No.317938

You should be able to get some financial aid, but I'm not sure how much.

The student loan thing is generally a problem for people who go to shitty expensive private schools, study some worthless subject like gender studies, have no skills, and then graduate and are left with some minimum wage job. If you go to a decent school and study something with good job prospects, the debt is worth it. The higher income you will earn throughout your lifetime from going to a good school will more than compensates for some small amount of student loans you accumulated over two years.

As you get older you will realize how important (in most industries) going to a good school is. It is something that sticks with you for the rest of your life, for better or worse

>> No.317944

Indiana has a strong business program and sends a lot of kids to Wall Street. Assuming you would have did well in school and landed a job at a Wall Street investment bank, your salary during your first year would be equivalent to those 120k in student loans. At UK, the best you can hope for is maybe a 40k a year job when you graduate. You made a piss poor decision that you will regret soon and shouldn't be distributing this terrible advice

Man, Indiana would be terrific...The China-based business I'm planning to work for has a production factory in Indiana. I'm frugal as fuck (except dating a rich girl really murders my savings). I know this was posted yesterday, but if you come back can you give a review on Pasadena and other California schools in general.

I live in a Chicago suburb and it's my dream to get out of this shitty weather and go to school in California. I've good grades and am taking AP classes, so I could probably get into every CSU school, but I'm not sure if I could get into a UC school, expessially since it's a lot more money for out of state people. I've looked at Pasadena and thought I might be able to go there then transfer to a nicer UC school.

Questions: How hard is it to find affordable housing near the area?
What's the overall feel like at PCC vs. a 4-year? Since I'd be moving to a new sate, I'm wondering if it's easy to make new friends and go to parties at a community college?

>My plan used to be to learn philosophy, ace philosophy, and then go on to academia or law school. Then I realized how horrible that would make my life, so I've begun to rethink things. Now my plan is to pursue programming (I've taken a couple of courses and have interning experience with C++ and java). I'm finishing up my first year this semester and my GPA isn't going to be very good, but I guess that's what you get when you take 200-300 level courses because they interest you (formal logic, philosophy of science, psychoanalytic theory, calculus, latin, etc). I might barely pass calculus this semester, which is really hurting me. Over the summer I'm going to intern again as a programmer (hopefully), pick up RoR and SQL, and get certified in at least two languages (Oracle Java exam, maybe one for SQL or maybe one for excel just for kicks). Then I'm moving across the country and going to live dat entry level coding lyf

Current Curriculum :

Graduated :
> Joint Double Major in Bachelor of Law
and Philosophy from Université Panthéon-Sorbonne, Paris I (2009-2012)
>Joint Masters Degree in International Corporate Law and Philosophy of Law from Université Panthéon-Assas, Paris II (2012-2014)

Undergoing :
> Research PhD in Political Theory, Corporate Law and Business Ethics in joint research programm at Institut de Recherche en Droits des Affaires (IRDA Research Center of Panthéon-Assas Paris I) and Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (Doha, Qatar)
(Hopefully : 2014-2017)

> My plan for the future :
Professionally :
-Settle a post-doctorate research contract with
both Panthéon-Assas and the Doha Institute,
to work as teaching assistant.
- Get an HDR (Habilitation to Direct Research) and become chairmaster of a masters research programm, directing the research of students.
- On the side, become a private contractor with both french and qatari government as field political and legal analyst by settling a job at the french embassy of qatar and france (basically move from one place to another each semester to teach and work for each side)
-Network and make my way into the political spheres of the leading parties of both countries by being a double legal matrimonial agent to settle corporate and state agreements for each side.

Personally :
- Starting with personal capital of 150k in estate + 1m euros in estate owned by parents which I'll inherit eventually :
- take a loan, buy a second property that I will rent until my loan is paid back. Take another once my work income savings allow me to, and start building up estate capital as it goes with renting, flipping and reselling to buy better, bigger.. it's a family estate legacy I've been taught since very young.
I'll probably live off the interests, if my work does not hold up to my expectations.

Continued..

Ideally, I would like to become the ambassador of France in Qatar, and start up my own corporate law office once I accumulate enough capital necessary to, specializing in Franco-Qatari relationships.
With my wits, and my looks - I'm fairly certain I will be able to become a trophy wife and land me a fairly arranged wedding with some oil company owner in Qatar and won't probably be required to work from then on, in which case I would like to do things for charitable causes, like opening high tier schools in Qatar, and becoming an NGO ambassador, or representative on field.

I can answer this question with very specific empirical evidence that I have gathered by studying in a research field that allows me to participate in seminars at the Ecole Normale Supérieure.
I will try to give you an account on the main differences between the two establishments which have conditioned my choice.
The Ecole Normale Supérieure is in terms of professional career building, is very oriented towards the industrialized production of administrative and public policies agent, which is considered to be their work of art.
On the other hand, Panthéon-Assas is much more efficient at building on private capital and corporations which are very neatly close-knitted and allow for very interesting private sector professional dynamics.
Comparing the education level, judging from the intellectual content of the courses I have followed at both establishments, I will definitely settle for an equal level.
There are very little variations or differences in the intellectual knowledge that is provided, and the main difference resides in the divergence of courses the carreer of their students is oriented towards ( government politics, public policy and state agency for ENS vs. private sector legislation, finance and corporate law for Assas).

The reason I have chosen to go to Qatar, is because of already well established familial inter-relationships with head of states emirati family and, some personal preference for the environment and life conditions available in comparison with Paris.

Speaking more simply,
I have concluded that it would be a rather easy entry into the government foreign affair ministry, once I have established private capital of both estate properties and corporate law agency in Qatar, than to go through the established ENS industrial formation type of agency career which is a tough competition with little selection into the higher echelons, and more private networking to do the job.
In other words, I can open far many more doors from where the money is (in Qatar) that will lead me to far higher up positions in the french government, that if I were to follow the traditional path.

I mean, I'm scared for my future. I couldn't go to a good school initially because my parents make just enough that they can't give me a FUCKING DIME to help me and I get 0 financial aid. Had to work my ass off after HS just to get enough money to afford basic living expenses... so I'll graduate at 25 (yeah, I fucked up in life after HS).

I have to take out about 30k in loans to pay for my school, and my future isn't even secure.

I just want to be successful and live well one day; it's all I think about and all I want out of life. I just want to be valuable and I want to be competitive with all these grads from better universities.

Go to be a psychiatric NP. It takes 3 years to get a master's and you'll net 90,000-100,000. Go another 2 years to get your DNP, and your wages go up to about 100,000-120,000.

It's the best way to be a therapist without going to medical school. Your scope of practice will be very similar to a psychiatrists; you can work in a variety of different settings and provide therapeutic counseling for people, as well as prescribe medication.

Additionally, psychiatric NP is one of the highest paying nurse practitioner specialties and one of the highest in demand. Also, being a male can net you easier acceptance to good programs, as well as some scholarship money.

You can go to get an MSN with any bachelor's degree, you just have to take a few pre-req (around 4-5) classes at a community college.

Otherwise, you're looking at a PhD or school psych. If you go the PhD route, be very careful; a lot of specialties give you shit pay, even after you have a doctorate (50-60k tops).

Best of luck to you, psych-bro.

Diligence is key. Seeing that you are willing to sit down and work on a hard problem is extremely important. If you have those experiences to share then do so.

Passion. If you think something is cool, fucking talk about it. Some rando pet project related to programming is gold. I talked about how much I liked smart home technology, that's shit I really like and sincerity goes a long way.

>Did I ace the interview process?
I did ace the interview process but I liked interviewing to begin with.

I'll put it like this. It's not necessarily true that you need to get the right answer immediately, the important thing is that you are willing to put work in and be in a solid direction by the end of the technical interview session.

If there is a technical question (e.g. in an NxN array of ints, how would you rotate the square by 90 degrees efficiently). You ask questions about the problem space, you talk about possible solutions, reason ALOUD and try to clarify points that are ambigious, talk as you whiteboard the problem. If the session ends you'll leave a good impression as long as you know a solution would have been found soon.

>Doing my best never to fuck up again?
That's good and dandy but make sure that you don't shy away from difficult problems or be afraid of failing.

I realize I'm at the best possible place for my major but CMU is fucking miserable, I'm trying to transfer ASAP. Ideally I'd end up working in Silicon valley and making bank, or joining a startup, but whether that will still be a possibility depends on where I get into as a transfer student.

Above all I'd love to go into politics (was just as much of a social studies guy as a math guy in high school) but there doesn't seem to be a feasible path to it, don't want to end up an unemployed PoliSci major. And from all I've heard law degrees are a terrible investment nowadays.

What's wrong with CMU? It's probably your specific living situation that sucks rather than your surroundings.

>> No.339387

There are definitely some happy people at CMU, but I personally know 5+ other freshman attempting to transfer out. It's not for everybody. If you're 100% certain of what you want to do and are singlemindedly devoting yourself towards that, CMU is the place to be because the opportunities are amazing. Alternatively, if you quickly find a really great friend group and support yourself through the fucking terrible workload.

My first year was shit for some non-academic reasons. Girlfriend of 3 years and I broke up, yes I realize long-distance was a stupid idea but I had to at least try it. That fucked me up a lot personally, I was very close to her and I don't get close to many people. And CMU demands 100% constantly, I was taking a really fucking tough courseload (had a lot of AP credit so I was in some sophomore classes). Basically I crashed and burned first semester. This past semester was much better but still not great.

If things had gone differently my first year maybe CMU would have been great for me, but as it stands I don't want to spend 3 years trying to patch up my GPA.

Also a good third-to-half of the students are socially incompetent, it's 60% male and extremely asian. As a guy who doesn't find asian girls particularly attractive (not hating, just a preference), it's a bad time. I realize these alone are not compelling reasons to transfer but god are the social opportunities better at pretty much every campus I've visited. And I'm not even a party guy.

I'm a full-stack developer for a small web-design firm and a startup. A stepping stone to greater things.

Most of my friends who graduated in CS ended up working pretty stale jobs at companies like GM, or in defense. They focused so hard on getting high GPAs that they neglected to develop useful side projects. They're about as useful as any other cog who knows Java. I let my grades go so I could learn back-end frameworks and interesting languages, and it payed off, my knowledge is broad but sufficiently deep in certain areas to make me valuable.

Ultimately, I see luxury boiling down to two things. Not having to do what you don't want to do, and maximizing your ability to do what you want.

I've more or less got the first one covered, now on to the second.

And the classes, at least in the graduate programs, give you some really great opportunities to learn but also to connect with people who have worked, or currently work, in the industry. We get frequent guest speakers on a number of really interesting topics, of course a lot of it is the standard liberal chest beating about privilege and what not which is also reflected in most of the student body. As for anything else, I wouldn't really know, In year that I've been a grad student here i've eaten at the dining hall twice, and I have my own apartment that I rent with trust fund money so I don't really know about the housing deal either.
