qrd?
why should i care about bond yields going up when historically they've been much higher?
people usually point to the fact that it isn't JUST the 10y but it's relationship to shorter maturities being the signal for a recession/bad time.
but even more so, why the fuck does any of this shit matter? it all just comes and goes. people who bring up bonds are often like the people that bring up the dollar collapsing. "bonds" and "catastrophe" seem to be never far apart in a conversation. but i don't see any precedent for that, and even if it were to occur (say hyperinflation for example) all i see going back through history is the world economy recovering and growing.
basically i'm a fanatical dip buying permabull, in the grand scheme at least i'm all cash as of writing this.

it would take a bit to explain properly
bonds are going up because people are selling them, and this is going to force the fed's hand on doing something about it eventually (probably yield curve control)
people say that bonds are selling off due to inflation fears, but when i see a rising dollar index, and people dumping stocks, bitcoin, and precious metals, that makes me worry about deflation problems, which is VERY bad for the market
ultimately it's just another indicator to keep an eye on. if bond rates were continue to skyrocket and the fed did something like raise the funds rate to control them, we would see potentially corporate debt bubble pop, which would be VERY bad for everyone as well.
all of this generates uncertainty, which the market really does not like.
there is plenty more to this, and it's worth learning about too.

the market has grown accustomed to near zero bond rates
look at what happened to the market when Greenspan raised interest rates
different industries are very reliant on low interest rates, such as housing / tech / utilities
they receive their financing through issuing commercial paper - when interest rates go up, they are able to borrow less money, and pay more interest, meaning their ability to grow and profits go down
on top of this, some investors pursue dividends in the S&P500 which is 1.47% - when the rate is higher than this, *some* investors opt to buy bonds instead of buying S&P500 - in other words, less demand for equities, more demand for bonds (which is bearish for the stock market)
furthermore, the biggest fear is really that the Fed is "losing control of the bond market" - the market wants to know that the Fed is in control, always. This creates more fear / uncertainty about financial stability = bearish
This is why you should care about bonds, even as a permabull like myself

If bond bagholders think the yields are going to increase, then they should want to sell their bonds in anticipation, which would make the yields rise higher, but when yields are suddenly higher from bonds being oversold then people should want to buy fresh bonds with the new higher yields for easy steady gains, then the rates should drop again, right? So this could make bond yields more volatile, am I guessing correctly?

Powell literally said yesterday that he expects a massive inflation spike
The only reason we haven't seen it yet is due to dead money velocity
As the economy reopens, as people are vaccinated and get back to work / going back out and about, money velocity will rise
When this happens, we will see big inflation
Go check out the Fed's balance sheet growth this year:
https://www.federalreserve.gov/monetarypolicy/bst_recenttrends.htm
The rising price of oil will also have a large inflationary effect (it's weighted heavily in PCE) - higher oil prices makes the prices of everything go up, as it increases the cost of plastic (which is in everything) and increases the cost of transportation (every product needs to be transported)

Money velocity also rises if companies begin to keel over due to bankruptcy. That's why we're seeing deflation happening right now. This is the trigger that's causing velocity to increase, and the fed can only fix the debts by hyperinflating, which will cause the velocity to increase even more... RIP.

Lumposter. The FED are extremely calculated right (Jerome isn't going to have a slip of the tong). One of the FED's responsibility (nowadays) is to maintain stability of the american market right. Let's take these two assumptions as facts.

Why would jerome destabilize the markets by basically saying 'there's going to be inflation and we're not going to do shit about it'. Based on the above THE ONLY reason to do that is to guarantee stability later.

How? Some type of YCC right? It seems to me FED is preemptively destabilizing the market so they can pro-actively take control of the yield curve.

Do you agree/disagree?

All I can figure is other nations have been printing absurd amounts of money as well, some of which back up their currency with USD, which has increased their demand for USD.
So even though we've increased the USD supply by trillions it's still not enough to meet increased demand.

they are being extremely calculated, i agree with that, he said they have tools to deal with stuff like this, but won't say when, where, and if they will be deployed.
their hand will be forced on YCC if bonds keep jumping up this fast.
>It seems to me FED is preemptively destabilizing the market so they can pro-actively take control of the yield curve.
this is also a possibility, but it's hard to say ultimately what their plan is. if they want to proactively get ahead and take control of yields, we may cross that point sooner rather than later.

interest rates can't go anywhere, they're stuck. yield curve control, QE, direct bailout money, the whole entire kit. it will be deployed indefinitely. the fed cannot stop.

the time you had to worry about this was 2008 when they claimed they had a plan to undo what they did, but they can't. in 2011 they announced they would slow down treasury-buying and in 2013 they actually tried it, and we had a panic now known as the taper tantrum. we are monetizing the US debt, forever.

companies with huge debt loads will be rewarded. their liabilities will vanish into thin fucking air. the commodities bubble has already started. it's a run on everything that's not nailed down -- but can be. tech stocks will destroy millions of lives.
