Stansberry called for tsla collapse years ago when he bought solar city. I actually sold my tsla at the time because the analysis seemed airtight. Literally nothing about tsla price made sense and that was back then pre-split 300. Stansberry was right but was years to early on the call. Burry has been short just as long a time, he can just afford to stay short for a really long time.

You want it to be down by the time you close it. You could open a short at 700, ride thru 800 and close at 600 for a profit.

I personally never short something that's still rising. I wait for signs of weakness and a short term decline, as has been the case for Tesla in the last few weeks.
That said, shorting in general is a lousy business: the big money is made on the long side, with lower vol and larger, more stable trends.
Only exception is commodities where the vol pattern is reversed and contango can help.

i literally wanted to short tesla at $840 but i'm a yuropoor who knows nothing about traditional markets. the only broker i tried (degiro) has stuff like warrants rather than options. trying to work out the odds and profit it seemed like by buying puts expiring in mid-march i would make maybe 4x my money if it went down to $500. which just didn't seem like enough of a reward for the level of risk
which tells you even if my faggot ass pussied out, a bunch of people had to be shorting the top for the odds to be so bad. no?
