It's older than PoW and has never worked for securing value. It can probably work for things like executing short term code that's later settled on chain.
Bitcoin mining means you have an incentive to harvest green energy in places you couldn't before. It might even be profitable soon to launch solar farms into orbit that just do the mining work there instead of trying to send the energy back with all the losses that you get doing that.
