Contracts exist for a reason. If the contract states that he needs to give 1-3 months notice before walking, then that is what needs to happen. If he just walks off, the company can document what kind of losses they experience due to the employee not abiding by the contract (loss of revenue, hiring a temp, training the temp, etc), and go to court to make the former employee cover their costs. And if the company execs are spiteful, they'll just rack up the bill as much as fucking possible.

The difference between a senior/staff/manager/director/etc position is really minimal when you get down to it. When I was in college I juggled 3 jobs at a time, having a stable one and taking on different ops to improve my resume. One of them was as a Marketing Director for a painting company. It was basically door to door sales which sucked because it was the midwest in the middle of winter and the company had a shitty rep because they hired college kids to paint their houses and they would spill shit everywhere.

I was the one that trained kids to cold call and go door to door, showing them how to not choke on words in awkward situations. One of the kids first shot at taking the lead, the dude opened the door with piss stains down his sweats, hard not to laugh lol.

Anyways our main boss was a trustfund douchebag, that would take all the credit for our work and ended up cutting our pay 50% then another 75% because he couldnt close. He would demoralize the kids I brought on making fun of their height and calling them gay. They weren't gay, and one of the kids had a lifelong issue with his height and I got fed up on a conference call with him and called him out. I said it was bullshit how he could treat my team the way that he did and it was completely out of line. I was 18, he was closer to 30 so it was kinda awkward to hear that from a kid I suppose. The only time I've quit a job, was when it was already known at the time I started the job that I was only going to be there temporarily, because it was a summer job while at university, or because the employer knew that I was waiting on an application for the military (Canadian military is so understaffed and underfunded, that an application can take years for the paperwork to go through, depending on what jobs you're applying for).

All those jobs ended on good terms, although I think the boss for one of those summer jobs totally forgot that it was just a summer job, because he looked quite surprised and slightly panicked when I casually mentioned that university classes were starting up in a couple weeks and thus I'll be saying good bye soon.

The company i worked for got shut down and absorbed to the mother company overseas. I was in a similar situation where people would quit and they just wouldn’t hire anyone but divide up their tasks to other employees for penny raises at performance review. It was down to just two techs and our director got the news they were gonna absorb us and stop operating the US cause of COVID. Was a damn blessing cause it was so comfortable but I just detested the people soooooo fucking much, always taking advantage of me. I’m a team player and I’m a high driven guy, i like taking care of business early and quickly so i can enjoy my day. These fuckers always hold off their work because they know at the end of the day if i wanna get my ass out an hour or two early, I’m gonna make sure everything’s finished. I took my boss into a private conference room and told him my five year plan was to be drunk, fat, and alone in a studio appartment on christmas eve with a gun in my mouth. He asked me to stay on a month, and on my last day i signed two different million dollar contracts for our biz division before taking him out for freedom beers. Thats how its done.

If the company is fragmented enough, it is very much possible to leave from a lesser role on good terms and come back later on for a better role. In fact, HR and hiring managers may prefer that if you are qualified for the better role and have basically been vetted.
