I am qualified to be doing network ops stuff like configuring routers and switches and some network admin work.

The general theme is to never do a job where you are paid to do "work". None of these jobs ever get real recognition and will be automated soon.
Instead, do jobs where you paid for the decisions you make, ideas you have, and strategies you develop. That's what the "knowledge economy" actually is. Most peoples in tech (developers) are not in the knowledge economy.

Some pro tips of what HR can and can't do, remember they're shit scared of Fair Work so they tend to toe the line:
1. They can't ask your reference if you were shit at your job, they can only ask if they would hire you again (if your shit boss is your ref they might say no, if HR is your ref they'll give a wishy washy corpo answer that dodges the question). So think about it this way. HR from hiring company asks your reference (who is supposed to be your manager but you can fudge this) the following questions:
1. would you hire anon again?
2. did anon achieve KPIs set out for everyone?
They may ask these questions because they involve no personal judgements from your ref. But, you can front run this line of questioning because this is how a job application goes:
apply => aptitude test (optional) => phone screening => 1st interview => 2nd interview => police check => reference check
Note how the reference check comes last? By the 2nd interview you should already have provided a narrative to the hiring manager as to why you were fired. If your friend is comfortable defending you ("yeah he didn't achieve his KPIs however I believe the KPIs were unfair and unrealistic given the circumstances") then controlling the narrative will be easy. Try to avoid outright lying (aka saying you hit your KPIs if you haven't), but make sure you manipulate the story enough to your advantage that you never have to outright lie.

I can only tell you how things work, it's ultimately up to you to decide. I have personally never had a manager who had a bad opinion of me because I always work to my manager's expectations and never to the company's expectations (unless my personal ethics and judgements are trespassed).

My gut feeling is you should not use your actual manager as your ref, and should use your friend, but your friend needs to be comfortable speaking authoritatively about how you are at work from a supervisor's perspective. If he's not experienced doing this then that's something to consider.

You'll have to weight up the pros and cons of who you use.

Makes sense to me, just make sure your ref is willing to give the same story and it's not easily deboonkable (aka the company you worked for is a famous multinational and there is a Financial Review article saying they recently hired 2000 new staff)

Yes, it's certainly feasible, depending on a few factors. I would generally recommend 'manipulating' the truth rather than outright lying, but if you truly have no credentials or experience it can be worth a shot.
This largely depends on industry and the specific employer, though - smaller companies I've worked for often don't check any references or credentials, I've never lied about my experience on a resume but it's funny to think that at my current job I could have. Larger companies, especially those with an HR team, are much more likely to verify.
Overall you probably only have a 30-40% chance of getting away with it if you can really sell yourself in an interview, but if you really have nothing to lose then you might as well go for it.
