Work in IT basically doing helpdesk and electronics work.
I am qualified to be doing network ops stuff like configuring routers and switches and some network admin work.
I have only ever had this job and I want out, to another place. I could be getting paid more but I like, something is wrong I'm afraid to take the risk and jump ship. Plus if I left they would be even more understaffed than we already are which isn't the main factor but I do respect a couple of my coworkers enough that it is somewhat of a factor. The big thing though is I feel like I'm in a grey area of being dunning kruger qualified but not actually pro level. But then I hear stories of people with much less experience than me making it big in IT

Ultimately I want out so I invest in the stock market for this reason. Maybe I'll do crypto soon but right now I'm trying to build my stock portfolio. Four figure hell right now.

For reference I make 60K a year in midwest US.

Tldr I work in IT and while I wouldn't mind working, I would rather not as I feel life is too short and want to try and squeeze whatever I can out of it before I'm too old to enjoy it.

Do not go into software development lmfao that's an even bigger meme. I'll give some advice because I am a chronic career slut and have a feel for how the corpo world works.
(Also fyi this is me >>30194430)
1. In business, accounting will fuck you. Finance is incredible as long as no one is out for your blood. Consulting takes monumental effort and commitment but the pay-off can be insane, especially when you bank your reputation and break from big 4 to join boutique.
2. Software development is an absolute joke and you will literally be a slave. The actual tech skills you need to know to make it are: software engineering, network engineering, enterprise/domain/solution architecture, IT management
The general theme is to never do a job where you are paid to do "work". None of these jobs ever get real recognition and will be automated soon.
Instead, do jobs where you paid for the decisions you make, ideas you have, and strategies you develop. That's what the "knowledge economy" actually is. Most peoples in tech (developers) are not in the knowledge economy.
Understand this and you will make it.

Say the company had a strategic shift and your area of work became redundant, or financing/revenue shortfall so all the newbies got cut, or literally anything that won't be immediately deboonked by google
get a friend who is an ex-colleague to be your reference and practice the narrative with them
HR legally can't check the details of why you were let go beyond asking your references and publicly available info

Some pro tips of what HR can and can't do, remember they're shit scared of Fair Work so they tend to toe the line:
1. They can't ask your reference if you were shit at your job, they can only ask if they would hire you again (if your shit boss is your ref they might say no, if HR is your ref they'll give a wishy washy corpo answer that dodges the question). So you control the narrative for the most part of why you were fired, PRACTICE ANSWERING THIS QUESTION IF YOU'RE A SHY AUTIST
2. They can't ask anything that may reflect a personal judgement of your work. Unless you were failing objective and universal KPIs set for everyone this should work in your favour. Again, you control the narrative.
You always need at least 2 refs for job applications. Use your friend from work and a uni professor that loves you. What relationship your refs have with you matter far more than their job titles, I usually tweak/enhance the job titles of my references lmao

Ok so I think the best thing would be to get that mate of mine as a reference

> Unless you were failing objective and universal KPIs set for everyone this should work in your favour.
Well I was according to them, but are you referring to if they call up my employer to verify that I was working there? Can this be avoided if I dont put HR or my manager as a reference.

What I found btw (used to sell everything you can think of, clothes, shoes, appliances, ovens, fridges, perfumes, advertising etc) the best sectors to work in as a wagie are the luxury retail and sales industries where people who have money will still spend money regardless of economy and your clientele is much more based. 99% of them wealthy people and what's best WHEN YOU SELL LUXURY GOODS (opposed to pragmatic goods people need to buy lets say my oven broke I need a new oven) people buy luxury stuff to treat themselves and others and the atmosphere is much better. As long as you can manage women around you and not get into any stupid gossip it's the easiest job you can get.

So think about it this way. HR from hiring company asks your reference (who is supposed to be your manager but you can fudge this) the following questions:
1. would you hire anon again?
2. did anon achieve KPIs set out for everyone?
They may ask these questions because they involve no personal judgements from your ref. But, you can front run this line of questioning because this is how a job application goes:
apply => aptitude test (optional) => phone screening => 1st interview => 2nd interview => police check => reference check
Note how the reference check comes last? By the 2nd interview you should already have provided a narrative to the hiring manager as to why you were fired. If your friend is comfortable defending you ("yeah he didn't achieve his KPIs however I believe the KPIs were unfair and unrealistic given the circumstances") then controlling the narrative will be easy. Try to avoid outright lying (aka saying you hit your KPIs if you haven't), but make sure you manipulate the story enough to your advantage that you never have to outright lie.
>I have a ref from another call centre job that I had before that liked me
based, I always take my referees out to a fancy dinner when I get a new job. They're bros and would literally tell a hiring manager I am God if I asked them to. Good refs matter more than degrees.
Now you just need to spruce up your resume (get as many people to review it as you can), get your story straight, and start applying.
Chuck your resume to agencies as well (Hays, Chandler MacLeod, Hudson, etc etc) to improve your hit rate. Shit out 5 applications a day (or more if you can) and hit the gym rest of the time (this is important professional advice trust me).
You'll be back on track in no time.

> HR from hiring company asks your reference (who is supposed to be your manager but you can fudge this) the following questions:
Thanks again for the well written answer. So would it be worth the risk of having my manager who offered to give me a reference as a reference? He might just answer "No" to the question: would you hire anon again? and is just offering me a reference out of politeness (but then again it's likely he wouldn't have offered it in the first place if he thought I was a complete trash heap)

> 2. did anon achieve KPIs set out for everyone?
Funny thing about the KPIs is that they were not given out to me in concrete terms. E.g. Anon, I expect this to be done by this date. And when I was laid off in my final meeting they just said I wasn't a right fit.

> Try to avoid outright lying (aka saying you hit your KPIs if you haven't), but make sure you manipulate the story enough to your advantage that you never have to outright lie.
What if I said they were downsizing and not hiring anymore people and trying to cut costs?

I can only tell you how things work, it's ultimately up to you to decide. I have personally never had a manager who had a bad opinion of me because I always work to my manager's expectations and never to the company's expectations (unless my personal ethics and judgements are trespassed).

My gut feeling is you should not use your actual manager as your ref, and should use your friend, but your friend needs to be comfortable speaking authoritatively about how you are at work from a supervisor's perspective. If he's not experienced doing this then that's something to consider.

You'll have to weight up the pros and cons of who you use.

>What if I said they were downsizing and not hiring anymore people and trying to cut costs?
Makes sense to me, just make sure your ref is willing to give the same story and it's not easily deboonkable (aka the company you worked for is a famous multinational and there is a Financial Review article saying they recently hired 2000 new staff)

Just imagine you are a HR person or hiring manager with a computer and a phone. What realistically is the amount of digging and checking you would do to check out a potential candidate? Everything you do follows from that.

Good luck dude. The Australian job market is one of the best in the world, put in even a bit of effort and wagmi.

Yes, it's certainly feasible, depending on a few factors. I would generally recommend 'manipulating' the truth rather than outright lying, but if you truly have no credentials or experience it can be worth a shot.
This largely depends on industry and the specific employer, though - smaller companies I've worked for often don't check any references or credentials, I've never lied about my experience on a resume but it's funny to think that at my current job I could have. Larger companies, especially those with an HR team, are much more likely to verify.
Overall you probably only have a 30-40% chance of getting away with it if you can really sell yourself in an interview, but if you really have nothing to lose then you might as well go for it.
