China keeps the yuan devalued against the dollar to make its exports more competitive worldwide. China also keeps the yuan on a fixed exchange rate rather than a market-determined rate.

Selling oil on the yuan would totally fuck up China's currency situation. The whole point of having a peto-currency is to use currency demand from oil transactions to strengthen the value of the currency. For China to commit to a petro-yuan, they would likely have to abandon the fixed exchange rate and face rising yuan strength making Chinese exports less competitive worldwide.

Maybe when China has moved manufacturing to Africa and entered a post-export economy, a petro-yuan would make more sense.
