Suppose you bought 300 GME at $50, then it jumps to its peak ~$130. You write the strike price, giving yourself as much room as you have confidence. IDK what the historical prices are for that point, but let's say you choose $150 and get a $15 premium.
That means you get $15*300 shares up front. If the price passes $150, you can be obligated to sell your shares for $150. If the price is $160, you have to sell for $150. If it's $200, you sell for $150. The calls are covered, so you're making $100 on your $50 shares no matter what if you have to sell. In this case, you lose opportunity - after $150+$15, you would have made more money not selling CCs, but you're still not losing money.
If the price dumps, your shares lose value, but the calls lose value too which means you can buy them back (and exit your potential obligation) for cheaper, taking the difference as premium profit. If the price spikes after that, you've exited early and get to keep your profit. If the price stays dumped, you'd have made more money selling the top, but you'll have lost less money because your descent was partially reimbursed by the calls.
If the price crabs, the options expire and you keep the premium AND keep your shares to play as you see fit from there.

BS, I had 3.2, as of the last two weeks it has dropped to 2.8. In now way can I relax. My account started around 1.1 two years ago, 70% of this is appreciation 30% is me adding funds. I no way do I feel more relaxed. The larger your balance goes the higher the stakes. Not complaining as I am fortunate but don't people to think when you hit low 7 digits that it is game over. I would say you need to hit 6-7M at which point you could be hands off.

There are some smart people on here, your deductive skill might have you included in that set. Yes, I am. I live in a semi high cost area (San Diego). I have a great income and WFH. Wife and two kids. Would love to have enough to stop working and move to a slightly lower COL area but ufnortunatly the places I wanted to go to have also boomed like Nashville. All in all I am blessed and thankful. The VOO idea is not bad and sort of part of my plan although I would use a combo of IWM VOO and QQQ. That is th reason I pegged to 6-7M. Use some of it to buy house and have about 5M to live off of interest at around 4-500k a year (in reality using half of that and reinvesting the rest into real estate).

Clown market ending is going to be so sad.
