Former TEFL here from South Korea. I was put in the middle of fucking nowhere and my experience was pretty different from the standard ESL Teacher (two days a week, I literally had to take an hour long ferry to an island to teach at two schools)

The apartment I got was rather small, but not bedroom closet small like in Japan. Because I was teaching in a rural part, I also made an extra ₩500,000 (roughly $500 US).

Good News: The work-life balance was fantastic. Some days I only worked roughly 3-4 hours and got to spend the rest of the day doing whatever (still had to stay at the school though for whatever reason). Got to spend many weekends sight-seeing and partying in Seoul is a lot cheaper than you would think. Also while the pay was rather cheap, all of my utilities were paid for by the schools so all the cash I made was for a net profit.

Bad News: A lot of us were looked at as low-class citizens. Koreans, especially in rural areas, are pretty racist. Also a good amount of them are pretty dumb/selfish (go to a gym and watch them stack weights disproportionately and use the shared hair drying to dry their balls). Also, as per my contract, I wasn't allowed any side gigs. I did get a few but had I been caught, I could have had my contract cancelled and deported back to the states.

Overall, I did enjoy my time there. I think I just got the short end of the stick compared to the average ESL Teacher. Had I been placed somewhere more populated, I think I would have enjoyed my time far more. I'm honestly considering going back there and praying that I get put in an area that isn't filled with farms.
