I didn't know it at the time, but getting red pilled and depressed was one of the greatest decisions of my life because it got me kicked out of college. Trades are awful and I do low voltage which is actually pretty easy in comparison to concrete or whatever. Here’s what trade life looks like: you get up before the sun tired as hell with your eyes burning, guzzle coffee from a thermos and smoke or dip. Then everyone blasts nasty diarrhea shits in the chemical toilets and gets to work. No women, no slacking off, no fucking up unless you want to get berated. Then break for another cig, eat some terrible fast food and back at the grind which is slowly turning into chronic back pain and pill addiction. Wetbacks heating up their beaner slop in a dented microwave, retarded convicts grinding concrete floors all day. Everyone is fat and most of them are dying young - because of their job. Everything is hurry hurry because they get a big bonus for finishing and quickly and cheaply as possible and you’re on the hook if your shit takes a minute longer than their extremely optimistic expectations. Same shit, different building. “Where you guys going next? That new building in SF, yeah that’s a good job.” Safety training again. Gotta get a cert for some shit. Convict called me a faggot today and i couldn’t beat his ass because the safety inspector was there. Misery every day, dust in the air, hearing damage. Made 80k this year, enough to gamble on stocks but not enough to ever really make it. Guess I’ll go kill myself now. Who would even notice?

I took a strange path. Started with going to school for mechE, didn't find a job for like two years after graduating so I worked in a auto shop fixing cars. Eventually got an interview for some startup that wanted to make industrial hybrid generators, got the job, but the company never got off the ground. The recruiter that contacted felt bad about it so he got me an interview at the place I work at now, as an assembler on the manufacturing floor. Eventually I proved myself enough to get a job as a engineer tech and kinda morphed it into what I do now which is part engineer, part lab manager, part machinist. Pretty chill job.

15 years in the field and I saw one retirement. Everyone else gets too old to do the job at the pace slaving demands.
Got me a retirement gig now. I shitpost and trade crypto all night while I wait for stuff to break. The pay isn't as good as working in the field, but the pay/work ratio has never been higher.

I make about 60k a year doing cable mainline maintenance. Basically all you do is beat off in your truck half the day waiting for some stupid fuck to plow into a pole or pedestal and then go splice it back together. The other is just adjusting levels at amps and freezing your fucking ass off. In MN where I work it was -30 on Superbowl weekend. And on Superbowl weekend I was on call. Which means when all the power packs exploded on the amps outside or cable literally sucked out and dropped the signal out I was freezing my ass off in a bucket 30 feet in the air. Not worth. Don't fucking ever go into cable maintenance or for sure cable installation. I did that shit for 5 years. People are absolutely retarded and complain about internet speed when their computer won't even turn on. Legit, not even larping. Was one of my calls. A laptop that couldn't even get past the welcome screen of windows. Her expectant look on her face made me want to off myself.

I fucked up my arm at work and the lady doctor who was checking me out just had her father get into a pretty serious car accident and she came into work that day. Broke down in front of me. Everyone who is actually a essential worker is getting rekt by corona. Last year I worked over 160 hours of overtime. That's 4 regular work weeks of OT. Have been on call so many times to keep peoples internet up because everyone is working from home. I'm so burnt out I took like 3 days off and the whole system went to shit while I was out. I now have over 180 hours of PTO that I need to use before year end. Aint going to get any better either.

The semicon business is interesting because like you said there is so much that goes into it and it literally powers all of modern society, but 99% of people have no idea it exists or how any of it works. Its like the back-end of a website except the website is the whole world.
Im an individual contributer, but if I was in a position to hire someone who does what i do, I'd say candidates with strong hands-on technical skills have a huge advantage. People with automotive experience for example would do well or anyone with manufacturing experience. Most of the engineers here are clueless when it come to how the robot systems actually work, and that's what gives me some job security.

I'm a nurse, so it's lots of sitting behind a screen and then coding a patient for 50 fucking minutes straight while they are squirting out blood as fast as you can put it in. Even faster if you are doing effective compressions. Then the family comes back and watches you break their loved ones ribs and pump them full of the very thing that is making them bleed out and insists you keep going and the Dr is like lol sure because alteplase costs $26k per bottle. It's a little more nuanced than that but really if you don't get someone back within a few minutes they are better off dead. And obviously when someone is bleeding you should not give the strongest anticlot drug in the world.
I don't like my job but the fuck else can I do to make $60/hr? I've seen enough soft penises so not interested in working with hard ones. Not gay either.
Before this I worked at an airport doing whatever. Making hoses for hydraulics, refilling oil tanks, driving a fork lift, changing tires, recycling, garbage, pressure washing. It was always either freezing cold or soaked in sweat. The only constant was coming home filthy and covered in oil. You can still smell it on your skin after a shower, I'd swear it was in the air. Even wearing gloves you constantly had to wash your hands with that gojo orange oil and sand soap. Before you could even clock in you had to go through security too. I sometimes envy the guys who just play with spreadsheets all day while wearing a suit. Comfortable clothes, no mess, just your numbers and papers and a fat bonus based on your metrics. There's even a watercooler to talk about the weather and who's screwing who's wife around. If I could do it again I'd have chosen statistics or software engineering. Insurance is the closest I'd ever get to the medical setting. It's unreasonable and a completely pointless job. People run their bodies into the ground, at best you give them another couple years to be fat/stupid and do the same thing that got them in the hospital.
