I've never been a big fan of franchising fast food/fast casual. There are a number of good reasons why. Take some notes

1)when you zoom out and look at the issue nationally, there is this race to the bottom with everyone else to deliver value to the consumer and receive sales as a result. It means you operate on these paper thin margins and you really need money in the bank for unforeseen circumstances.

2) you have to deal with the franchise. Which is mostly a one way street. You kick up to them and spend hours and hours a week making sure your stores quality is consistent with their national standards, but if you're ever in trouble, they don't give a fuck. They couldn't give a shit if they release a 7 dollar value box which results in you making only 30 cents off of every customer who comes in and purchases it.

3) Your foods quality is dependent on time. French fries are a goddamn nightmare. unless someone lives >10 minutes away from your location, their fries have started to starch up by the time they get home. The cheese loses it's soft gooeyness. Milkshakes melt. It sucks. Thats why the doordash/grubhub generation is trending towards food products that people can enjoy in a larger window of time. Chipotle, chinese food, etc.

4)it's probably not as big a deal now with covid and WFH but catering is always a huge deal. The problem is that you need a product that can be enjoyed hours/days after it's production. Burgers just aren't that.


Also, I don't like to bet on any type of foods that gross people out. Nobody would want to date whatever creature ate at a burger joint 3x a week. Why should I expect it to become some profitable pillar of the community?

The only real advantage to a franchise is having someone that handles all your paperwork and already has a number of distribution contracts set up for you. but now with the current climate in small business, it's more profitable to go your own way.

I'd like to start by saying your criticism is heard and not disregarded. I'm screenshotting your post as I find it to include healthy talking points about my chosen career path.

Beginning with your first point, the way our franchising works is my current store owner will own, build, and use the support of his other stores to open mine. I will then own 18% of that store the day before open. Any financial burden the store has that I cannot cover is placed onto his bank account. I am only worth 5k and my boss knows it. As for when he is fully paid off and I own the store in whole, I plan to only take a 70k salary and invest the rest into a business savings account. I want the store, not the reward.

Secondly, I have had the pleasure to work with culver's corporate for two years now. I have helped open multiple locations with them and gotten to know higher ups. I happened to meet the man who allowed my boss to be an owner, what a fucking weird guy. These guys are not corporatists, they're all familial, the whole company is. Company's change yes, but culver's is private and the family has taken years to pick it's CEOs to find the right fit. Not to brag, but I currently spend 55 hours a week making sure my owners store is spic and span and live to see the positive feedback from our corporate visits.

Covid/drive thru only has had little impact on sales, and has helped on labor cost. We are now launching curb side pickup with an app, but are not listed on grubhub/door dash. How serious do you suppose this market to be? Personally I have mostly written it off due to only negative experiences with them myself.

I'm not gonna cater a damn thing till my son's/daughter's open house. Catered for Bob Evans and nearly introduced a bullet into my brain. I'll take the loss on profit.

Finally, culver's does not deter people. Look at this thread and all the positive feedback. "You work at McDonald's?" Genuinely has the opposite connotation of "You work at Culver's?"
