A friend sent me a referral link a few weeks ago and after some of the most basic dd (googling) it's a dead project that never went anywhere when it came out years ago. I assume if it's app based they're just harvesting all your data and selling it.

It's a consensus protocol, so inviting people makes the network stronger. KYC is handled by a 3rd party (Yoti), they don't have access to all your KYC data since you choose what gets shared. The data they require to be considered "KYC verified": name, dob, phone #, email, photo. That kind of data isn't very valuable. If it was a data mining scam, they would be asking for a lot more. That info is just enough for them to prove that an account is owned by a real person and not a bot (and that people don't have multiple accounts). Less bots/multiple accounts, the more real people involved, the more integrity the consensus has.
That being said, this shit was shilled here 24/7 back in 2019 when it first launched by pajeets, their userbase probably consists mostly of 3rd worlders who are going to dump the second this thing hits mainnet.

It is a consensus algorithm, it's just not proof of work. The network is the people running the app. Actual nodes are to be implemented soon™©. The idea is that people provide the "security" for the network by inviting other real people. It wouldn't be a bad idea, if people could be trusted for something like that. Of course, most people involved don't give two shits about the tech, they just want free money.
