I understand a lot of newcomers got into oil last year and are desperately impatient to see it finally pay off but part of the reason the banks did this is for precisely that reason. The problem for Gelsinger is that while he's a smart and capable guy, Intel will need at least 5 years to start turning around, because of how long development times are and how much restructuring needs to be done in the entire company. In that time, they may well lose portable to ARM, given that Apple is going full speed ahead with the M1 and Microsoft is going to ship x64 emulation for Windows ARM soon. given the amount of legacy shit that MSFT has to support I suspect that will take a few years to mature out which gives INTC room to breath.

don't forget that INTC also holds an ARM architecture licence from when they used to produce XScale (acquired from DEC) so they could pivot if they wanted

7nm development is headed by a different team to 10 nm - they've already announced a delay but who the fuck knows. i'll be camping out on realworldtech/semiwiki to keep my nose to the ground.

either way INTC is a high risk high reward semi play with a 3-5 year timescale for payoff

I think a few months ago I read TSMC was planning on expanding into the US with a new cutting edge fab, that would help them as well.
