29938906 No.29938906 [Reply] [Original]

Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized p2p privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and borderless, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT (hidden tx amounts) ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a Monero user willingly providing a view key for a specific transaction.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptos. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of txs increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier of entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward will gradually approach 0.6 XMR in May 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

>getting banned from exchanges, there will be no market very soon
no it won't, watch the Dr. kim video on game theory. Even if it does get banned in place, it won't get banned everywhere and you can always exchange other crypto for monero so you'd need to ban all crypto. also drugs are illegal but people still use them

>it provides privacy through obfuscation, not cryptography. This is bad news for privacy. The only thing “crypto” about it is that miners solve cryptographic hashes
it uses technology to make it private, no one fucking a care about whatever point you are trying to make

>no smart contracts. Not really a robust currency for something that markets itself as such
no need, monero is money - not contracts. leave that to something else

>it is traceable, in a probabilistic way. Technically speaking, more traceable than cryptos that implement zk snarks
trusted by DNMs, nothing is 100% and there is also user error. monero is the best we have and they keep on improving it. just because you might have a clue about the transactions, doesn't mean it is traceable

>Spam attacks are economically feasible for those with intent to destroy the network. From the monero plebbit itself (search “spam attack”in the monero subplebbit). It would show you that a spam attack could increase the blockchain by 60GB for a measly 1260XMR.

Only exchange delisting I'm aware of is Bittrex and there was no liquidity there anyway. Atomic swaps will be implemented soon and then this is a non-issue.

>>it provides privacy through obfuscation, not cryptography. This is bad news for privacy. The only thing “crypto” about it is that miners solve cryptographic hashes

Wut? It's obviously more private than every other crypto out there. Why wise would darknet be adopting it instead of alternatives?

>>no smart contracts. Not really a robust currency for something that markets itself as such

Who cares, BTC has no smart contacts. Part of Monero 's appeal is it's trying to do one thing well: be a fungible currency.

>>it is traceable, in a probabilistic way. Technically speaking, more traceable than cryptos that implement zk snarks

Source on this? It's not traceable. Probabilities won't hold up in a civilized court.

>>Spam attacks are economically feasible for those with intent to destroy the network. From the monero plebbit itself (search “spam attack”in the monero subplebbit). It would show you that a spam attack could increase the blockchain by 60GB for a measly 1260XMR.

With responsive devs each attack just teaches them how to better strengthen the network. This isn't a serious concern if network keeps growing at current rate.

>>29942921
Sorry but this was a very bad defense of something I’m assuming you are invested in.

>it won’t get banned
This is the only pass, yes potentially people could still transact with monero if it gets taken off exchanges.

>no one cares about whatever point you are trying to make
Well, I care. Technically speaking, monero was more likely to be traceable until they increased the ring sig size. Point is, security through obfuscation is not a good approach

>no need for smart contracts. Leave that to something else
Smart contracts are huge. Lets say you want a decentralized poker system that uses monero. You don’t have a lot of options to show your game is provably fair and will pay out. So the currency itself remains decentralized, but the apps around it remain centralized. I.e. monero lacks utility

>trusted by DNMs
Monero did have the early mover advantage, made in 2014. Technically speaking, yes it’s better than BTC, sure. That said, just because junkies switched over to Monero doesn’t automatically make it good

>whats important is the response and future mitigation
No. This is what destroys a crypto. Ethereum does not scale, and now they are paying the price. Monero has been around since 2014, and that is a high risk high probability attack. That should have already been mitigated. Everyone in the security world knows preventative action is better than reactive action. Websites dont “wait” to be hacked or attacked before trying to implement security features

>> No.29943646

>>29942429
great post with some interesting questions.
>banned
There are plenty of exchanges that support Monero and have continued to support Monero. Regulation fud is a meme. Just last week Monero was added on a Turkish exchange. Why is this news not covered, but if an exchange in South Korea gets rid of it, then there is concern? Just yesterday, Grayscale announced interest in investment interest.
And, as often is said, Bitcoin went through this same cycle previously.
>provides privacy through obfuscation, not cryptography.
yeah this is completely fucking retarded.
monero uses zero knowledge proofs to hide transaction amounts and it uses the ed21559 curve when creating stealth addresses, etc..
>no smart contracts.
Monero has usecase. It is designed to be digital cash and financial freedom.
>>it is traceable, in a probabilistic way. Technically speaking, more traceable than cryptos that implement zk snarks
zk snarks are also traceable in a probalistic way too (through metadata leaking). Zk snarks are also trusted set up, which requires trust in a centralized company, which is an inherent weakness that Monero does not share.
You can argue that Monero's model may have some weaknesses, but every type of privacy can have ways of attacking it. The important thing is that the privacy is built into the base layer, and also that the protocol is improved if weaknesses in privacy emerge. Monero's built in privacy has been adopted by the dark net for a reason.
>Spam attacks are economically feasible for those with intent to destroy the network.
Spam attacks, also known as a big bang attack, have been talked about before. Your calculations are also behind because monero has become more expensive.

Anything marketing itself as a monero mixer is a scam taking your money. If 10 mixins are not enough for your threat model, you can 'mix' (churn) just by sending to yourself. Unless you are trying to evade someone with deep pockets who is actively trying to break your individual privacy, this is not needed though.
If that does describe you though, churning is a very good idea.

2 BTC and low hundreds XMR. I'm not 100% convinced I'm going to make it because there's some chance XMR ends up being the Linux of the cryptocurrencies, and not in the sense that Linux is being on almost all servers out there but in the desktop sense. I feel like it's going to be really hard to market and promote a project like XMR considering the high level of retardation from BTC maximalists. Too many people trust these shitty twitter influencers. Also, I know all of you faggots hate twitter and reddit and you do good to hate these platforms, but if you have an account there remember to advocate for privacy and XMR every now and then. I think Monero can and should be the Linux of crypto. If we get to the point that using Monero is so user friendly your grandma can use it, the underlying tech will speak for itself. Android OS is Linux after all. Imagine an anonymous "bitcoin" wallet that uses lightning and atomic swaps to automatically use Monero as an anonymization layer. I think a lot of XMR maxis miss the mark, because it's not all or nothing in the currency game. I also think Monero has a decent chance of winning long term. Linux is only subjectively better than Windows while XMR is the closest thing to completely outclassing BTC. There is just such an asymmetric upside for Monero. It's worst case for adoption is being the number one privacy tool for anyone high IQ.

what does pic related mean? it says this when I'm going to make a trade buying monero by SEPA bank transfer. I haven't found any further details anywhere, but I found one listing of a guy selling for cash by mail where he said if the price of monero goes up he's only going to give how much monero the money is worth when it arrives, vs. if it goes down he doesn't give a shit and you only get the original amount agreed on. Is it the same for normal listings buying by bank payment?

Yes. Imagine you run a business selling crypto for fiat. Someone sends payment of 100 usd which at the time equals 10 shitcoins. By the time the payment arrives the price of 1 shitcoin has doubled. Are you still going to give him 10? Ofc not.

When you buy crypto you essentially buy whatever amount of crypto the money you sent equals at the time of your money's arrival.

B-b-b-but exchanges will ban it! B-b-big government will tell me off if I have it!

If exchanges do ban it along with government's it simply proves exactly why we need shit like Monero.

Monero isn't perfect, show me one crypto that is, but it's fully private(minus retards user-error) But the blockchain is constantly evolving and changing. Recently went from GPU mining to CPU, show me one other crypto that has done this.

Monero isn't run by anyone, it's run by a group of people with one common goal: I don't want the government tracking every aspect of my life. And it's working if exchanges ban it, so I hope they do. Atomic swaps soon anyways lol

>yeah this is completely fucking retarded.
>monero uses zero knowledge proofs to hide transaction amounts and it uses the ed21559 curve when creating stealth addresses, etc..

yeah, there are more parts to privacy than just the ring signitures:
1. hide sender (ring signiture)
2. hide amount (ringCT)
3. hide recevicer (stealth address)
4. hide IP (dandelion++)

Fudders always attack point 1, because all others are damn solid. Also ring signitures will get a lot stronger soon. In short term a bump to 15 or 17 participants is considered, in mid term triptych will be implemented at a moderate 64 or 128 participants, but for long term the very same tech can also do 8k+ participants.

Most cryptos have none of the 4 privacy measures, and yet if one can maybe be brocken fudders get hard.

Each transaction is 2kB in size
So the total memory consumption is 240GB

However at the minimum block size (300kB) only 108000tx/day can be processed.
Without dynamic blockchain scaling an attack like this takes 11666 days or 32 years (lol)
even with scaling this attack is SLOW af, there will be plenty of time to fix it once it is noticed
tx count is public, so it's easy to detect, too

Switching form BTC to XMR is a lot easier though. You'll need a new wallet, yes, but the workflow remains the same. Scan QR code, hit pay, done.

Algorand is better at doing what XRP tries to do.

In future we will have:
- Bitcoin as an easily auditable global reserve currency to back other currencies and assets with, including paper money (think of how Dollars used to be "silver certificates" or backed by gold and convertible into it at a fixed price)
- Monero as a store of wealth for anyone who desires privacy
- A handful of centralized digital currencies like Algorand or L2 solutions for BTC/Monero that enable quick transactions with low fees

Your Monero isn't "stored" on your computer. It's stored on the blockchain. And the only way to access it on the blockchain is if you have your seed phrase (your seed phrase is basically your password).
You can use your seed phrase with different wallets to access your Monero.

What I'm mostly worried about is storing the cold wallet safely. I've been thinking about ways to store it in a way that causes as little attention as possible, in case someone breaks into my apartment.

What I've also been thinking about is making a keepassxc database just for the cold wallet, in addition to paper storage. Just need to come up with a good password. I might just be paranoid, but I want to protect my investment.

If you are having trouble thinking of a hiding place, I would recommend putting it inside something that would be a pain to get to (e.g. inside the wall, underneath the floorboard in a room with something heavy on top of it, inside a piece of hardware that would have to be taken apart to access it).
most important is to practice good opsec and don't tell people how much monero you have.

there's marginally more efficient ways to do it but you can look those up yourself. at current rates you won't turn much of a profit after accounting for electricity, so you definitely shouldn't set up a dedicated rig. feel free to buy an rpi or similar and set up a node to contribute to network health, though.

That should be enough to get started, you can check the OP for the mining guide at the bottom for tuning
I would recommend using XMRig and moneroocean as your mining pool but it's entirely up to you which pool you go with, you should try to support smaller pools though
Getting a dedicated rig might take a little while to break even, if you tune that current one really well though you should get a good hashrate, one pointer I would recommend is disabling hyperthread

Well it has a pretty similar supply and inflation rate at the moment, and it has had a parabolic pump just not to the magnitude of btc's. A lot of the interest in monero and altcoins in general is a direct result of the btc bubbles bringing money into the market which eventually flows into altcoins. And people tend to sell their altcoins to cover losses in their btc positions, or to buy btc when it starts to pump. So the goal is to outperform bitcoin otherwise you should just be holding bitcoin, or just buy xmr right before you intend to use it.
