I always loved going to the bank as a kid in a small town. Everyone was nice and liked me. They gave me candy at the bank, my grandmother taught me how to balance a checkbook, one of them even took me in the vault which was very impressive. I also used to hang out at the fire department and police station. They showed me cool things too. Everything was close to each other so you really could get by just walking. I read a lot of good books from the library. But the post office guy wasn't as nice and I never went there much. I guess my sperg questions didn't have the same charm to him. Still managed to get my hands on a few of the old dial boxes when they upgraded to boring old keyed boxes. Sold some and kept one which was sadly lost in a move. Maybe it's easier to get around as a kid but everyone is on high alert from the second you talk to them these days as if it's something strange and threatening. The small town effect really does not seem to exist anymore. Closest I got was chatting with a liquor store owner and she went over some of the nitty gritty details and offered to get we anything I wanted since I came in so much. Would even throw in a free 50ml bottle now and then when she wanted me to try something.

I think the only two countries without a federal reserve central bank is Iran and North Korea. Soon as they both add a Mcdonalds and a Starbucks you knows its all over.

The tubes are used for certain things you cannot use the ATM for.
For example if you want to check if a transaction went thru or if you want to get a new card, they can send you the paperwork to sign in the tube and the card.
It's true that the US banking system is a bit behind. They've only started using chips in the last decade.
Using a credit card doesn't require a PIN in the US, once the numbers are entered there are no confirmation, 2-factor authentication or anything.
I find that pretty neat.
Americans aren't very likely to get robbed by a street criminal as they mostly travel within the safety of their car and they're pretty good at segregating socially, not going to the 'wrong neighborhood'.
While fraud still happens, the bank and vendors pay for it.
If somebody steals your card and somehow manage to get your PIN in Europe, you're the one paying for whatever they manage to charge, or you have to prove you were robbed.
