Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized p2p privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and borderless, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT (hidden tx amounts) ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a Monero user willingly providing a view key for a specific transaction.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptos. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of txs increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier of entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward will gradually approach 0.6 XMR in May 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

I'm thinking about buying monero with something like 2000 or 2500 euros with the plan to hold it for a long time. I don't have any immidiate use case for Monero, but I believe it has potential and the price will increase. That's why I'm looking for a wallet that's as secure as possible without too much hassle.

Do you think it's a good idea to store a large amount into a paper wallet for holding, and maybe a smaller amount into a GUI wallet for possible use? Should I also get a separate computer for maximum security? This shit is making me a little nervous, because it would suck to hold for a long time only to find out that your funds have been stolen or otherwise lost.

Nice, that should make for a pretty good hashrate, best bet for running it as a server is to use linux, if you're really new to that you might want to try something like ubuntu server
Also, make sure you have 3200MHz memory over as many DIMMs as possible, good luck

Memory speed is less important with older CPU models from what I've heard but if you're going with ryzen it's defenitely worth the investment, as for DIMMs it's mostly so that XMRig can access more memory at once, I don't think think you can go smaller than 4GB DIMMs though
2666MHz is still pretty decent, should still pump out a good hashrate
Ubuntu server's a good place to start with server distros and that's even where I started for server hosting, I don't like UBT desktop but their server distro is pretty alright
I mostly run arch now for mine but I also build a custom kernel on install, SSH should be fairly simple if you know how to use the terminal already
One thing I'd recommend is looking in to crontab to launch your miner on boot, that or creating an init script for systemd, it may sound complicated but it's really not too bad

To newcomers looking to get in. Just DCA. Don't fomo in.

This project is for the future to ensure governments can never seize your assets unlike with other cryptocurrencies. We don't know what the price will do in the short term. It might crash to $100 tomorrow or go to $500. We don't know and don't care what the price does in the short term.

All we care about for now is to have a system that is COMPLETELY private and untraceable so that funds are permanently hidden from governments forever.

We think because Monero is the only coin capable of doing so (as evidenced by Monero being the only project with a government bounty on it).

This means that in the long term Monero is going to outperform Bitcoin, yes. But we can't predict when and how pricing will develop in the short term.

Treat it like a retirement fund. It's guaranteed to go up in value in the long run but don't expect short term moon missions. Go to another project if you want short term speculative gains.

Monero is stable because it is propped up by actual usage on the darknet. It's why it doesn't dump like the rest of the market right now. Because people don't stop buying drugs, weapons and cp from the darknet during bear markets.

It also means Monero pumps slower because we actively shun moon kids and speculators towards the hottest new shit like ADA currently to chase short term speculation gains.

If you do some research and decide that the Monero project is indeed Important for the future of mankind and financial privacy then you're welcome.

Watch the video in the OP for an introduction.

Follow instructions here (not cake wallet but you should be able to use the info) https://www.getmonero.org/resources/user-guides/remote_node_gui.html
Once you connect, create a new wallet with your seed and rescan. It should appear.

I also have a 3950X. It's fantastic for mining Monero, but like the other anon said, getting better RAM is crucial. Yours gonna get bottlenecked by the 2666Mhz sticks.
See if you can get 3200CL14 sticks. Those aren't THAT expensive and have good speeds out of the box. If you like overclocking, you can easily make them work at 3600CL14, which should increase the hashrates.
I haven't benchmarked myself but with my RAM overclock, I was in the top 25 of some site by looking at their users' hashrates.
You can also easily undervolt it to increase hashrate while reducing power comsuption. You can add a -0.075V offset to core voltage and it will work just as well for 99% of tasks, including game and mining, even if this fails certain stress tests like P95 because the voltage gets too low with very specific workloads.

Sorry, don't have much to share, most of what I learned was by reading forums where other overclockers discussed how to take the most out of the chips back when Zen 2 launched (not in English).
All of that stuff is OS agnostic - you can just set up values on BIOS. On GNU/Linux, you might have to look for different tools to do stress testing but that's about it.
What I recommend is that whenever you're looking for guides/threads in forums, always sort out by date and avoid anything from 2019. People were still learning how Zen 2 worked back then, and there's a lot of information that was later discovered to be plain wrong.
The sweet spot will be unique to your chip (silicon lottery) and your cooling system (Ryzen tolerates higher voltage if you give it more temperature headroom). It takes time but imo it's worth it.
Enjoy your CPU, the Ryzen 9 3950X is a beast and I don't regret buying it. Only the 5950X is faster than it on mainstream sockets. Sure, the next 12-core Zen 3+/Zen 4 will probably outperform it in multithread, but I've been enjoying this performance for a year now, so no regrets.

Adding to this, one thing that I've seen working for every Ryzen 9 was undervolting the CPU by between -0.05V and -0.075V. It receives less voltage and ends up performing faster since it gets more heat/energy comsuption headroom to boost clocks higher. The downside is that this will probably be unstable on some very specific workloads.
Here, it never crashed in heavy usage (compiling huge projects, running multiple VMs, etc.) nor gaming (even CPU-bound games), nor "light" stress tests (like Aida64's). But it fails instantly at Prime95 Small FFTs.
Since it's stable for everything else I threw at it and makes the CPU even cooler, this has been my daily setup for mining Monero while using my PC.

Note: lowering thread count on XMRig won't lower your energy usage, since the Zen 2 CPU will pump more voltage to get higher clocks on the cores you're using. So, if I try to use half of the threads available (16), I end up getting higher power draw than when using all 32 threads, despite not being what you'd expect.
You can keep 2~4 threads available for light usage while mining with the rest, and the computer is perfectly usable. You can free more cores if you want to play games (I can mine with 16+ threads and play Dota 2 at 144fps+). This processor is amazing and the core count comes in handy.

Sure. Making a basic trading bot is really easy. Just learn the basics of basically any programming language that supports floating point math (I wrote my bot as a Z-shell script on my RaspberryPi) and read up on how to use the API of your exchange of choice. Every decent exchange has an API.

CoinMetro has a demo mode where you can try out and debug your bot without your actual portfolio getting rekt:
https://help.coinmetro.com/en/articles/2812410-how-to-use-coinmetro-s-trading-api

Now if anyone here wants to chime in with interesting algorithms or some actual research on how to optimize the timing of when to place orders etc., feel free to share.
