If you want to travel cross-country for a few months, hell, that's a fun adventure.
If you want to aggressively save money by working for 6 months while living in a van and you know a safe parking lot or something, that's a good way to save lots of money for a down payment or something.

The whole situation is depressing because it's not really a choice but they're making the best of it. My concern is that those old van drivetrains probably don't have much life left in them.
