29856080 No.29856080[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

i have been rejected from 80% of the grad schools i applied to, including my dream school (math PhD). Am I actually just a retarded midwit faggot? I have a 3.8 GPA and a publication with some grad classes under my belt, but I still can't fucking believe I'm getting rejected from LITERALLY EVERYWHERE. my self esteem has taken such a fucking beating to the point where im just alcoholposting 24/7 for the past couple of days. I also have no fucking backup plan since I anticipated I'd get into at least ONE school. Oh and im a poorfag and none of my shitcoins are mooning. Thanks for reading my blogpost i guess, should I just kill myself?

presumably you have a math degree? lots of interesting programming jobs require that. by "interesting", i mean _actual_ software jobs, like fintech, simulation, layout tools, CAD tools, etc. not webshit and braindead UI business logic garbage.
why not poke your head into industry?

yeah I graduate this spring, I have minimal coding experience tho. I guess I don't really have a fucking choice, but my interests are mainly in pure math like logic, ergodic theory, and symbolic dynamics. I also do not want to work for a FAANG company or be a codemonkey. Maybe if I learn solidity i could work in fintech? lmao. it just hurts my self esteem man to get shit on this hard

im not the smartest person in my school (relatively big UC, largest of its size) but in every undergrad math class I get an A with no effort (besides online school where i have no motivation) but in graduate classes i struggled a bit but still managed to get an A-. I was always ranked at least 5th in every class I took, except for grad classes. Yes I do believe I can shit on my peers, but clearly i need to be taken down a notch since i got shit on this admissions process

Yep, thats why. I live in a Chinese/Korean community in california, many of them are frustrated about this as well. It doesn't help that Indians make the highest average income of all races, either.

We bros need to make a pact that once we rise up in power, boycott hiring anyone from any of these pozzed schools.

I got rejected from 10 schools the first time I applied to my PhD, I finally got accepted a year later. Competition should be big for a while since people that got fired due to the pandemic applied this year since they might as well go to grad school.

Just keep trying, it's a fucking pain, it sucks, it's expensive and it makes you feel inadequate, but it's not your fault, it's just that 99% of admissions people are assholes.

Bro I got rejected from UCLA and UCSD my first year round and got an interview from Stanford the second time around. This happens to about half of the people I have talked to. There may be some flaws in your application, and you might want to talk to someone who is in one of these boards.

Even your "lesser" schools may be hard to get into. Some schools release statistics on who gets in and what's their profile (I recall UCLA doing it, for example)

>>29857801
Oh yeah I forgot about that detail, some schools might have more limited funding, especially UCs since they've been closed for a whole year.

Do you have any publications right now? It might sound like bullshit, but if you're applying to a top grad school with no publications you're fucked. Start thinking of your top choices and reach instead.

Is your GPA bad? Usually people who apply to top schools have that as a non-issue. What's your scores on the GRE? Is that past the threshold? The only thing you can do if you're good enough is to apply to a bunch of schools at once and be good at writing bullshit on the SOP. Hopefully you did some undergrad research.

Lastly, I wouldn't assume that you're getting in like, ever. There was a guy on gradcafe that applied like 5 years in a row and got rejected from basically every school until he got into one. Get a job and just leave when you get in. Don't tell them that you're planning to leave in a year, it's their problem.

one publication on arXiv, not in a real journal unfortunately: https://arxiv.org/abs/2012.0081
3.8 GPA, math subject GRE was cancelled this year due to covid. 330 on the regular one, 166 quant 164 verbal 5 essay. Had various professors edit my SOP and say it was pretty good, but there is always room for improvement there

>> No.29859207

>>29858862
Yeah uh don't post your publications on 4chan lmao.

Anyway, verbal literally doesn't matter in STEM, 166 should be fine for the regular GRE since that's just one or two wrong questions. Definitely take the subject of you can. GPA is fine. The only suggestion I have is to contact your professor and see if you guys can publish that arxiv paper in a conference (not a journal, but better than arxiv).

>> No.29859450

>>29859207
oh right i guess im too drunk I didn't realize I doxxed myself kek. w/e at this point I really care. The thing is by my own standards that paper is pretty shit, I think I'll ask my professor to see if I can get something else going. What kind of job should I apply for? I was seriously considering fucking off from America and teaching english in japan a year from now (so I'd take a 2 year gap year) is this a retarded idea? If i reapply I'll have to take it, but im nto sure how well i could do. I spent last summer studying for it like 8-10 hours a day, and even then I could only get like 80%ile

>> No.29859964

>>29859450
80 percentile is fine. You'll at least get somewhere, the problem is that with no subject GRE you'll have trouble differentiating from other candidates with a number score. For contrast, I got a 168 on the general and a 40 percentile on the math subject, I'm a CS major and I was trying to get into a math program, I ended up going on a CS one since I knew I couldn't improve it enough.

Getting a job in Japan isn't that bad of an idea, you'd get some time for the pandemic shit to clear (unless you believe some kind of recession is following this, I don't think so, but that's your decision) and would give you some teaching experience, but I would rather get some experience in something related to math. Maybe some consulting gig, or some fintech bullshit? I got a part time job at a fintech company, but I'm a programmer, so it's easier for me to get that kind of stuff.

that could be one reason why admissions are so dogshit this year, since there's no number score. The main reason I would want to teach english is because im a weeb faggot and I also just want to take a "vacation" of sorts where i can fuck off from the bullshit of America/my family and just study in my free time. Since the next deadline for JET is next november, I'd have to get a job this year, then teach english the next year. But im not sure if i should just apply again while studying for the mGRE. furthermore i have no practical skills and have no fucking idea how i would get a job
