I love vidya, but too much vidya can distract you from the necessities of adult life. I got hooked on vidya to the point where I neglected developing any practical skills and now at 30 years old I'm a retail wagie who lives with his dad.

Vidya is particularly insidious because of how effective a vehicle it is for escapism. People get lost in these virtual worlds without realizing you do have to pay at least some attention to the real world. Maybe some people are fortunate enough financially to get away with it, but I reckon the majority of big-time vidya addicts end up paying the piper, like me.

If only I had spent more time getting my finances in order in my 20s then I would feel more comfortable now with my leisure time. As it stands I'm kind of all-in on crypto saving my stupid ass.

Learning an instrument is something that you can take with you to the grave and there are always new songs to play, new music to write, and greater heights to reach. Most instruments are timeless too, and won't be tossed away for a "new" instrument.

Street Fighter is a blip on the radar. A Fighting game in a sea of fighting games. There is no creativity in it, you learn frame data and matchups and startups leading into combos, and eventually you know the ideal way to play. There is a skill ceiling that's far easier to reach than that of mastering an instrument. Nobody's saying you can't enjoy multiple hobbies, but actually saying that mastering a fighting game is comparable in any way to a master pianist or violinist or guitarist, is delusional. I'll go "oh wow that parry string was fucking cool" a few times, and get hyped at clutch victories, but it pales in comparison to what music can make a person feel in their soul.

Mastering an instrument means mastering control over the emotions of other living things by the sounds you create. This is far more impressive and human, even, than mastering a video game, an object of the creative efforts of said masters in different fields.
