My point is though, the real holders here are waiting for the squeeze, not whatever today's pump is. So, the problem isn't that they couldnt hedge with a call, it's that when they execute the call someone has to actually get the stock moved at the end of the chain. If there was any naked shorting involved, or if it's proven that SI numbers are being tampered with through synthetic means, borrowing from ETFs, etc., then the whole thing blows up on itself.
The only way they could reasonably cycle themselves out of this is if a bunch of morons who were harrasing GME holders got the bright idea to start selling naked OOTM calls that were actually being bought by Melvin and friends, and all the while their brokers kept quiet while Melvin passed the hot potato.
