You need a semi modern gpu to mine ethereum. Monero cpu mining is almost never worth it. I'm making about $60 per month after power and fees with my 1070.

Staking is the alternative that doesn't require fancy hardware or lots of power.

Crypto

Running master-nodes is a pretty good gig, but most of them require a relatively substantial buy in to start the process. Dash-based ones are pretty easy, but I'm too poor to run an actual Dash masternode.
I started learning on TRUMPcoin because buy-in was very very cheap. The learning experience alone was worth it. Then tried to stake NRG and XSN and struggled for while until I gave in and used a real VPS instead of trying to host them on my desktop PC.
Just finished getting my PIVX node working this week, but still waiting for my first payouts.
In short, run masternodes, stake coins.
