Here is how the money is made though: every day those options are in existance they lose value the amount of theta. The theta on the long dated option you bought is less than the theta on the short dated option. You pocket the difference every day until expiration or you sell.
In pic related, the option you bought has a theta of 0.1998 and the option you sold has theta of 1.06 so every day, all else being equal you pocket 86 cents times 100 so 86 dollars. As long as you close the trade before expiration there is no possibility of losing more than you put in since the call you sold is covered by the call you bought. If the short call were to go in the money, then by definition the long call with lower strike price would be in the money so your broker would sell both calls and the money you spent is all that would be lost. There is a special case if you let them expire where you can get pinned but just don't let the trade expire. Always sell it early.

You open and close them simultaneously as if they were part of the same order. If the underlying goes straight up to or past the strike price on the short call you make the maximum gains possible which is the difference between the 2 strikes and how much you paid.
If it goes straight down below the strike price of the long call (the 2023 call in the pic I posted) then you lose the maximum amount which is what you paid in the first place to open the order. The goal is for the price to move up to the strike price of the short call by the time the short call expires in which case you nailed the strike price and expiration date.
The best way to wrap your head around spreads is to play around with them and think it through. Buy the longer dated long call at a low strike and sell the shorter dated call at a higher strike. The difference in premium is what you pay and your max risk.
