How do you stop wanting to consoom? I’ve been trying to live more frugally but the urge to buy worthless shit stays in the back of my head.

Personally I binged minimalism content on YouTube for a few months and I got hooked selling and getting rid of stuff the same way I used to be hooked to buying. Or buy things that retain value like precious metals, collectibles or if it scratches your itch, digital assets.

You instantly take any cash you have and buy crypto that’s literally it. I’ve had losses, I’ve bought tops. But in the end I am still winning.

I’m the opposite, I’m so risk averse and afraid to spend money I’ve unironically considered being a fully employed engineer while living in my car to save money

There are several ways to keep you from buying useless shit. If you're financially motivated, just start calculating opportunity cost for every useless item you buy (e.g. "if I had invested 50$ in BTC instead of buying X one year ago, I'd now have $500"). Another way would be to just start ignoring what people think about you. Because 99% of useless purchases (especially clothing, watches, shoes etc.) consists of items that bring no value whatsoever, but only serve to play the status game.

That said, I bought myself a Porsche cayman three months ago. I still tell myself that I just did it because it's a great car to drive and not to impress people. Well.
