It's a sample from my property I did a trip to recently, I got this from a big pile next to an old shaft, the shaft was partially collapsed and probably about 10/15m deep with a small headframe over it.

My theory is since the pile was on flat ground close to the shaft it might of been their ore pile, this one i grabbed because it looks like it's got an airleg hole in it so hopefully it was directly into an ore vein so will give me an indicator if anything good is hiding down there, gonna try and get it off to assay lab tomorrow asap.

I'll give it straight to you anon: you're going to make it. The fact that you're here and asking all the right questions is one sure sign. The other is that you want to help your friends and family.

At the moment the ratio favours silver. It's also the cheapest, and has the highest upside potential for the near future. Further down the line you can pick up some gold or platinum to diversify your stack.

Nothing beats owning physical metals, so this should be your number 1 priority. Pick up some classic recognisable coins from your national mint (America silver eagles, Britannias, krugerrands). Some good links in the OP, alternatively I've had good results with ebay. Once you have a nice little stack you can add to it with the "savings" percentage of your paychecks. PMs are not a speculative investment and you might be better off with trying to grow your assets with a small holding of PMs that you just build very slowly over time. The premiums (% of "added price" over spot) right now of platinum and silver are ridiculous.
Honestly, I think at this stage you'd be better off just visiting a local coin store and getting a feel for what is out there. Also doesn't hurt to become a regular since some dealers will give you discounts especially on low volume items well below anything you might find online.
If you want to hold some PMs now for "cheap" the best bet would be junk silver. These are alloyed silver coins that were historically used AS money. They aren't pure silver (a reflection of money printing throughout history) but you will usually get prices that are MUCH closer to spot.
Do read up on the kinds of junk silver out there. It is easy to mix them up.
