Vitalik is not as smart as people think he is.

The concept of gas fees was a shitty patch to fix all the inherent problems of smart contracts in a decentralized chain: they can be used to DDoS the entire network, doxx wallets, etc.

The point of gas fees is that they will increase exponentially until it's literally impossible to make a transaction if someone attempts to DDoS the network. This is why gas fees are not returned if the transaction fails. Vitalik was too stupid to realize it would fuck legit transactions if Ethereum ever became big.
