Unironically working as a waiter is what made me stop tipping as much. You get paid absurd amounts of money for zero effort. It's minimum wage work for 3-4x minimum wage at least. And someone not tipping is irrelevant since it all averages out with greater than average tips. Single diners especially will literally tip you like 30% or more very frequently when they are the easiest type of customer to wait on.

Obviously I can't speak for every restaurant, but as someone who has worked in both fast food and as a waiter, the cooks have no idea who the customer is and couldn't give a fuck less. The ones in nice restaurant , actually nice ones, do work harder. Last steakhouse I went to they'd regularly sweep the crumbs and took every single plate almost immediately as it was finished, and I never had to look for someone to get another drink. It was either already provided or I was asked.
That being said the price difference isn't worth that much, but they do deserve a bigger tip. Unless the services was phenomenal, I'll usually go with 15% at more expensive places. It gets more tricky when wine handlers are involved.
