Ask an HR manager anything.

>> No.294228

How big is the company you work for and how often do you guys check to see if an applicant really has the degree they claim they do or went to the school they said they did?

Whenever your wife gives my dick a break.

>>294228
It's a fairly large tech company, I'll leave it at that.

Our main focus is our engineering sector, hiring electrical and computer engineers. Due to privacy reasons, I can't just call up a university and see if someone actually graduated, but I can ask for a copy of their transcript.

>> No.294241

Do you in most cases? Or sometimes? I know technically you should, but do you actually commonly check?

>> No.294263

>>294241
Most of the time, yes.

There were a couple of guys who I actually went to college with that applied in the past who I didn't check. One still works here as an engineer to this day.

>>294253
This sounds a lot like 99% faggotry. It's basic supply and demand. I don't set rates, that's up to the discretion of the employer. Secondly, I only hire people I feel will be an asset to the business. A new employer is an investment. If you knew anything about investing, you'd know that breaking outside of your affordability window on something that isn't likely to bring in a positive return is just a bad idea.

Either way, blame all of your problems on the HR department, I don't care. Instead you could be out there getting skills, qualifications, licenses, etc. to beef up your resume.

>>294255
What's a whore mouth faggot and why am I worried about it smelling like dicks? Shouldn't I expect something with such a name to smell like dicks anyway?

Or are you looking for advice on how to do your own laundry?

This applicant came glowingly recommended by two of our employees who do part-time work at the applicant's current job. In the meantime, there are no other qualified applicants, we're blowing through OT like mad to cover the staffing shortfall, and now the entire department knows HR is a bunch of cheapskates, all over what amounts to less than $1000 year.

But do please go on about "investments" and "affordability"

We're given guidelines by the heads of the company. If it can't be, it just can't be, even if it amounts to less than $1k a year. I'd personally hire them in that situation, but then again I'm given lots of leeway in that situation. I was just trying to be empathetic and see it from both sides. Nah. Our HR department is fairly small, only 4 guys deep, and we're all white guys in our late 20s/early 30s.

I'm a manager, then I have my co-manager. Working for us there are two operations/HR analysts who help us out and deal with our spreadsheets and peoplesoft junk.

As far as not knowing about the field itself, we have our own jobs to do. The interview process doesn't stop with us. They sit with the project managers who interview them on specific job related things, we're just here to sift through resumes and get them into the screening process. In the HR and operations department, we deal with making schedules, people calling in sick/unable to come to work, payroll, overtime, internships, organizing training & coaching sessions, and things falling under that category. We deal with manning levels and have our own specific role with the company.

>>294357
>good luck being a shit stain who thinks the business revolves around you.

Haha, except I never said that, and this adolescent enmity you have leading you to make such accusations of character with zero basis only shows you're a manchild who got denied a job due to being an autist in an interview.

I'm 22 years old and I've spent the last two years playing poker exclusively to pay for my university education. Thus, I'll be graduating at 24 years old (debt free, though).

My school is a state university. My degree is in Economics (considering Managerial Economics so I can learn accounting and business too) I want to go far in life, in finance. I'm afraid no one will even look at my application though because of this.

I'm a smart guy, I'm driven, I know how to be valuable to someone and value is everything to me. But how am I going to get someone to look at my application? What can I do to set myself apart from the droves of other applicants from better schools with the same qualifications?

>> No.294894

Hey OP, if you're still awake, what type of person do you think generally aims for HR and actually becomes an HR manager?
What type of skills do you need to be succesful here?
What's you current wage? Is that above or below the average?
I'm interested in doing HR as well, but I heard that it's pretty tight to get in (women usually do it) and there's not really room for promotion.
Is that true?

Econ grad here, I was into poker but got fucked by black Friday.

You can try to put it in a resume. Focisu on the accomplishment of funding your education with it. You made money at this: it wasn't easy, you had to be smart and disciplined.

It will be hit or miss, but I think it is +ev to do so.

I didn't get into finance but I am doing fairly well. Note that it took me a year after graduation to get to this point, but I make close to 100k/year with a full time job and some side consulting. I'd rather not get into more detail.

I'd say I'm lucky, but you know luck is about making the right decisions.

A lot of econ people do fail. You won't be one of those people.

I have seen both sides of the coin. I have worked in a small place where my boss was the hr department. It sucked and was a huge conflict of interests. There was no third party to arbitrate issues or help you with time off, insurance etc.

I now work at a major company. The HR employees do nothing and make you fill out silly forms a lot but they are great if you need them.

>> No.295086

>>294826
Honestly, the best thing you can do for your resume is make it simple and to the point. You don't want an excessively long resume. Don't put things like GPA or IQ on it for the love of god.

>>294894
>what type of person do you think generally aims for HR and actually becomes an HR manager?

We're a diverse bunch. It depends on the sector. Usually customer service is dominated by women and minorities, but tech and engineering is still mostly male.

>What type of skills do you need to be succesful here?

Good organizational skills are a must, being able to communicate, being a "people person" and just generally having a business demeanor. You can't let emotion get in the way of doing your job.

>What's you current wage? Is that above or below the average?

I'd say it's right around average for HR managers. More than 80k but less than 110k is all I'll say.

>I'm interested in doing HR as well, but I heard that it's pretty tight to get in (women usually do it) and there's not really room for promotion. Is that true?

As far as promotion, it really depends on your company. I started out with this company as an intern. I majored in finance and was just trying to find any management positions I could get when summer rolled around, and this place paid pretty well. I got myself into an analyst position after graduation helping create schedules for workers and doing very basic paperwork. After I figured out what I was doing I moved into a management position after a couple years. I'm pretty much capped though.

>>294826
Make a personal connection. Usually when guys at my company take the effort to come in and ask about jobs and talk with project managers or supervisors and show that they really want it, they usually end up getting at least an interview if they're qualified. 24 isn't old, either, so don't worry about that. I was 28 by the time I finished college. I started late and went to school using my GI bill after I got out of the Army.

It makes it easier on management for us to take care of these things so they can focus on things like production and general productivity. With us to manage accounting, payroll, schedules, resumes, and things of that sort, it's much easier on the business. There's a lot of good we do. Normal project managers just can't handle everything on their plate plus HR and operational issues.
