Specifically, a transcontinental route through the US

its extremely expensive, they should really just find a way to tack a few commuter carriages onto freight lines so you could travel for 40 bucks a ticket

Maglev trains are literally science fiction technology and they exist today. Just a bit of fucking investment and they can easily reach plane speed. Low emissions, quiet, safe, they are pure luxury and based and I dream of the day I can hop in a cross country maglev instead of going to a filthy airport and putting my life in shithead boomer plane engineers

Yeah traveling at ground level where the track can be faulty or sabotaged is just so much safer.

Every dollar spent on infrastructure is one less dollar for Israel. The GOP will never allow it.

It takes long as fuck because usa has shit trains and it costs as much as flying. National park areas sometimes have scenic railways, but they are pricey, like hundreds of dollars for a day or two. A couple grand for some overnight ones.

Imagine if instead of sending all that money overseas over the past 40 years, if it was spend on infrastructure.
We could have had railways on par with Europe and Japan. Our roads wouldn't be riddled with potholes.
One can dream

I dont think a 3rd world country like the US has modern trains

I take a train to and from my home during the holidays from my college, and I live in the US. It unironically costs the same as plane tickets for the same distance. The only reason I don't take the plane instead is because the closest airport to my home is about an hour's drive, and my parents are too lazy to drive there and back to get me. For reference, the train ride is about seven hours one way and the plane ride is about an hour and a half one way.

I took a train from Missouri to Montana a couple years ago. 36 hours of total travel time. I got a private cabin, had free meals delivered to my room, watched movies, and watched the world cruise by. It cost about a grand.
It's the only way to travel.

One of my make it fantasies is buying a whole train cart and turning into into a luxuary mobile villa and then just living on it moving as it does across the US or Europe or Russia, through the wilderness, ordering food and playing vidya.

Or better yet, owning a blimp and just flying forever, only landing to resupply once a year or something. FUCK, replicators when?

Comparatively very expensive. In Europe the train makes sense. America is a bigger continent. Trains are barely faster than busses and cost 2x-3x as much but I took the bus a lot in Europe.

Sorry America isn’t a bigger continent but a bigger country than any in Europe.

California alone has the GDP of Germany, I believe.

checked

a grand is 2 months payments on a nice sprinter or high top transit, could see the world even better in one of those

it could also get you a nice pair of roller blades, plus the food you would need for the journey
