I believe that the climb from 4 to 450 was almost entirely caused by retail fomoing in, and if the shorts had covered the price would have climbed even higher (into the thousands) as also stated by one broker whose interview I'll post in a few minutes when I manage to find the link.
The only way to cover all the shorts would have been by buying the millions of shares held by the institutions, but not only they haven't sold them, they also have kept on buying them to this day, which implies they know the game is still on.
Moreover, the short interest of 78% (calculated as shorts / (shorts+float) ) shows that the stock has been shorted to almost 360% of float as of 1/29 and the etf XRT is also shorted 200% of float, which has been done to keep the price down in the past two weeks. This means a squeeze is still to happen, and the best catalyst will appear in one month, when XRT will claim the shares back to pay dividends. The funds will have to buy the shares at that point, which will drive up the price of both XRT and GME.
