It's like mining. You lock your coins in for X amount of time and get X amount of coins 'mined' in return. If the price crashes and you unstake in a panic to sell, you usually get penalized and lose most or all of your staking rewards.

I think Pancake might see some downs once people realize how much of the swap tokens are rugpull scams.
BUT if people THEN realize that there's a lot of development going on to provide locked liquidity to swap tokens, I think the sky is the limit.
