What's the point of planning a suicide?

I mean if a person is already hurting that bad, better to just get it over with. I suppose some people don't want to hurt family and are waiting to outlive them.
Or I can understand if you want to avoid becoming the vegetable most of us will become in old age. I see people in old folks homes and they are not enjoying life, just waiting to die, I consider to kill myself before I reach that stage.
