It depends on how you look at it. Your primary residence should reflect your income. Not to show off but rather to lock that money into your property. You can't cut your kitchen out of the house and sell it. As long as you can carry the cost and don't end up into massive amounts of debt it's one of the best places to put your money. In case things go south you can always sell the property, downsize and invest the remainder in something managed because you should only fool yourself once. The principal residence exemption and being able to deduct mortgage interest is just icing on the cake.
