The details are wrong but it is true there was a validation bug in all the nodes which caused a few transactions to duplicate or septuplicate thus causing increased supply.

Not all the nodes encountered the bug so the C chain where the bug happened could not make any progress as the majority of validator nodes disagreed, some validators obviously saw invalid state, other validators saw fuck yeah septilian transaction is valid. AVAX in this state stalls instead of continuing as normal as Bitcoin and Ethereum do, which then requires hard-forking and reverting state. AVAX didnt have to revert any state. Just consider these transactions as valid - as a bug bounty and burn the equal amount from the foundation.

A similar bug happened on bitcoin in 2010 called the overflow incident which caused into existence 9Billion bitcoins.
