bill gates is giving me fomo and i'm thinking of buying 100 acres of farmland in southern ON with my crypto gains and starting a tree farm. can any experienced anons weigh in? thinking
3/4 christmas
1/4 high maint (japanese maple, cherry blossom, apple)

is there any reason this land is so inexpensive per acre? only 10k per

it seems like you can make up to $15k per acre with just christmas trees every 8 years and completely pay off your investment, why is nobody else doing this?

I sold Christmas trees for years in Southern Ontario. You won't be able to actually sell any for a long time + good trees take a surprising amount of work to maintain.

All of our trees came from Quebec, but the majority of Christmas trees in big retail come from the States.

Also, everybody I knew that were doing it were fucking suffering. No one wants to pay reasonable money for eight years of labour on the tree (even if it's like $50) when fucking homedepot and metro are giving you a free Christmas tree with your groceries

I'm willing to put in the work, I've always wanted a farm and it seems like trees are the easiest crop and i'm willing to wait a while, it's mainly about diversifying and owning land to build a house on and raising a family, forcing my children to do free labour in 12 years. Instead of christmas trees (because I had a feeling it's a saturated market) i'm thinking of growing saplings of rare trees like japanese maples if I can find land that's sheltered a bit from wind. I can sell these every 3-4 years but they would be a lot of work. Apple farms seem saturated as well. Cash crop like spinach would be cool too, but that's legit full time farming and hiring temporary foreign workers

homedepot and metro have to buy those trees somewhere :)

value of the land will double in that time, farmland is going to explode soon, all of the smartest whales are accumulating

If I remember correctly, the big boys had their own tree farms, so they didn't actually have to buy from anybody. But also that was just what all the farmers said, so take that with a grain of salt.

Nonetheless, what I learned from working in Christmas trees, beyond that it's fucking depressing, is that there's not a whole lot of hope in the industry. Definitely focus on some of the rarer stuff, at least rich fucks will always want those.

You need to hire full time EXPERIENCED gardeners to care for Japanese maples. Can you afford that? Do you need licenses for selling plants? Retail or wholesale? What peat are in your area? PH oh the ground? Any competitors in the area with connections? Wannabe stel in some toes in the first year?
Taxes?
If you have to hire gardeners anyway, why focus on a just one ot two plants? I doubt you will deliver them all across America, so diversify your selection for the area

Oh and also your corniferous trees want acidic soil, so your fertilizer will burn the shit out of Jap maples if they are anywhere near each other
