Grew up in a small town in NY, about an hour and 20 minutes north of NYC, live near woods and cow farms but theres still small cities only 15 minutes away. There fields we shoot guns and ride quads. The past ten years things have changed. It was always expensive but now 2 bedroom homes are $450k easy, and the taxes for a home like that and a half acre are around $12k a year. Its also a police state now and they tax everything. They also encourage your neighbor to snitch. Beautiful old victorian homes and small towns but my buddy is trying to convince me to move to SC or somewhere south. That does happen sometimes (I remember last summer during the LINK bubble, at one point coinbase stopped being able to do withdrawals). But the actual reason why you have to wait roughly a week before taking them off the exchange is because it takes time for ACH transfers to complete. Before, CBP made you wait that duration of time, and you could only buy anything with your USD once the funds had cleared. Now they allow instant purchases, but it's really more of a locked-in IOU until the funds clear. Otherwise you could pull bullshit akin to check fraud from Catch Me If You Can very easily, by initiating ACH transfers, buying stuff, taking it off exchange, and then coinbase only finding out later on that you scammed them after the funds were out of their hands.

Yes, you make more. But cost of living and taxes are also far greater, and it just isn't worth it. But people fall for the meme anyway because they naively see it as a status thing.

Which gets to another issue I have with living in big cities like that. Almost everyone (at least in the good neighborhoods) is a transplant. Hardly anyone is "from" there. Nobody has roots. Nobody has kids. It's all just a bunch of transients and degenerates wanting to LARP as the cast of Friends. Absolutely soulless.

the main reason is volume of opportunity, density within various industries, and the abundance of corporate headquarters. find your niche and in NYC there will be more jobs in that field, at more levels of the ladder, than elsewhere. if it's an industry clustered here, of which there are many dozens, you can hop between companies to move up more easily.

In NYC you also tend to get exposure to things harder to come by elsewhere. This is more niche specific but universal - there are challenges, dramas, opportunities, and the like that happen here at a frequency and level that is very uncommon elsewhere. All of this increases your skills and the value of your experience.

Even today, with the economy wrecked, there are more good opportunities to be found in NYC than in most other US cities.

When I moved here, I was making $64k salary. I got to there with five years experience in an industry niche in another major American city. Six years later I was making $115k

>But cost of living and taxes are also far greater,
not as much as you think. rent is the only thing with high cost of living here and it's not bad once you reach a certain level. There's no reason to pay $3k/month rent in New York City even though many people do.

You have to understand that the city has 1 million "rich" people surrounded by 7 million poor people who live off of less than $50k/year. That means there is a lot of low cost stuff around. The longer you are here, the cheaper it gets as you learn how to do things.

Taxes are too high but it's not a big deal as your salary will increase fast enough and you can help by dumping money into pre-tax things.

Most importantly, you'll enjoy your life on a day to day basis. The little moments and the flow of things here, if it suits you, is irreplaceable. The city is loaded with jews, fags, sjw dykes, nogs, and puerto ricans but is still somehow enjoyable. that should tell you what you need to know.

Sorry you are too autistic to get it. NYC appeals to some people and really turns others off. It has to do with what's in your own heart. It's a place with a lot going on, literally, so it's stimulating. Even mundane things are infused with a sense of adventure and uncertainty - you never quite know what will happen. The city has a LOT of really great stuff, beautiful, amazing stuff. You get glimpses of beauty in every form constantly. You can talk to 100 people in varying amounts every day, for the rest of your life.

NYC is about the small moments - that is what creates the magic. Practically it is easy to see why we shouldn't live here. I'm not from here and I've left, and I rationally should not want to be here right now. All of that disappears the instant I return after being gone for any length of time.

Its a crab in boiling pot mentality, you feel everyone suffering together and feel a sort of comradery in how selfish and insulated you all really are. You think nowhere else in the world exists outside the concrete jungle because of all this shit happening right in front of your face. The slow country lifestyle would kill these crabs.

Muir Woods. That's a beautiful place, and it seems almost prehistoric walking through there, with the ferns and the trees and the clover all over the ground (it's not actually clover but I forget what it's called - looks like three-leave clovers though). It's beautiful.

You also have to see the sequoias though. If you make a trip of it, spend some time in Frisco, see the Golden Gate, tour Alcatraz, all that ... but then you have to take a week and drive to the Sierras on the eastern side of the state. Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon National Park (which is underappreciated and amazing), Yosemite National Park (which is very touristy, but deservedly so).

The Sierra Nevadas are some of the most beautiful, breathtaking scenery in North America.

How about Greenpoint? Would you agree that it's a nice area? It is, for your information. I'm sure, without even looking, that you can find an apartment well under $3k right now that is excellent. If you can't, you are really bad at using the internet, which suits me just fine.

If you want to get involved in things where that corruption matters, do them elsewhere. Again, figure out what a place is GOOD FOR and work within those parameters. I don't recommend buying real estate in NYC, for example. That does not prevent you from buying real estate, nor from living in NYC. $2500 monthly rent is as much as you want to pay. If you earn $100k/year, you can get an apartment at that price point. That's "made it" level in NYC and the magic number for true quality of life. You can live well for less but have to make tradeoffs like roommates, lesser areas, longer commutes, etc. If you can swing $2500 rent and don't hate your job every day, life here is pretty good.

Yeah wow I didnt realize so many. The highest floor apartment i can recall ever being in was this chicks apartment on the 43rd floor in downtown brooklyn? It was pretty fucking amazing, i remember one day when it rained and her apartment was above the clouds and windows didnt get wet at all. Other times it would though

Here is a shitty pic i took of the view i have better ones but its over the 4MB limit
