Something to note: Despite pic related being reposted all the time it looks like the website isn't showing that 200%+ anymore, though by combining the shares owned by the top 20 funds and top 20 institutions you still get 110%+ which is good. Also both of the total amounts at the bottom show an increase, which is even better.

Because if you weren't, for some weird reason, so concerned in getting anyone to sell, you'd look at the evidence being posted that the shorts didn't cover nor decline by as much as claimed. They moved their shorts to an ETF with GME in it. It's completely evident by gigantic increases in FTDs. Don't pretend this is some impossible conspiracy theory. They're smart, know every trick in the book, and want to get out of this without paying. There is every incentive to not play fair, and it's only publicly available data that's allowing people to see it.

It's well-established that XRT—among other ETFS—was used to obfuscate true short positions, demonstrated by the sudden increase in XRT FTDs right (and its subsequent inclusion on the threshold securities list) right around the time GME was taken off the threshold securities list. And if you don't think short selling ETFs then going long on every stock except for the target stock is a thing, I literally read a 60-page paper on this last night and will post multiple passages from it that demonstrate its adherence to the GME situation to a fucking tee, with the only difference being that the authors claim stocks that are shorted through ETFs tend to go down due to low institutional ownership, and guess what you grubby little dimwit? GME is 200% institutionally owned, like I've said to you multiple fucking times, and yet you choose to ignore it and stick with your dithering demoralization tactics instead. what did they buy them at then? citron had a price target of $20. if they shorted on the way up they could have covered their positions many times over once it settled at $50-$60. even then its a 50% haircut, so what? if im not mistaken they reported a 50% loss, didnt they?

>Accounts by market participants corroborate this conjecture: For example, MarketWatch reports that “One hedge fund with which Weinhoffer is familiar was struggling to borrow a stock and instead shorted an ETF that contained the shares, ... The manager then took long positions in all the other stocks in the ETF”. Barron’s recently runs a column piece titled exactly as “Synthetic Shorting with ETFs”. It points out that hedge funds frequently create synthetic shorting using ETFs, particularly when it is costly or outright impossible to borrow the target stock(s). In addition, some hedge funds prefer using ETFs to short underlying stocks so that their rivals cannot easily detect their trading strategies.

>Our empirical analyses suggest that directional betting, especially synthetic shorting, is an important component of ETF shorting activities. First, we document that shorting activity on the ETF rises with the difficulty of shorting underlying constituents. Specifically, ETF short interest is high when the demand for shorting the underlying stocks is high, when the lendable supply of underlying constituents is low, and when the cost of shorting the underlying stocks is high. When we proxy the level of short-sale constraint of constituent stocks using idiosyncratic volatility (Pontiff (2006)) and Amihud (2002) illiquidity measure, we find that ETF short selling is more active when the underlying stocks are less liquid or more volatile. These relationships are robust to controlling for ETF characteristics such as ETF size and turnover, and the intensity of operational shorting activities. It suggests that there is a (partial) substitution between stock-level shorting and ETF shorting, especially when an ETF’s underlying stocks are difficult to short.

and no one was allowed to cover those. they have to hold them until each reddit user can afford to buy their own tesla.

>> No.28916841

>To the extent that short sellers use ETFs to express their bearish opinions on individual
stocks, stocks that are heavily shorted via their holding ETFs should expect to earn negative returns in the future. Thus, in the second part of our empirical analyses, we examine the informativeness of ETF-level shorting for future returns. As a first check, we examine the predictive relation at the ETF level. We find that ETF short ratio negatively predict future ETF returns, suggesting that a non-trivial fraction of shorting activity in ETF is driven by directional betting. However, since ETF shorting can also be used for synthetic shorting on individual stocks, one should be able to more reliably glean information from ETF shorting activities by aggregating ETF short interests to the stock level.
One of the key innovations of our paper is that we construct a short interest ratio for each stock from the short interests of all ETFs holding that particular stock. This measure, which we call the ETF-based short ratio, reflects the collective shorting demand of that stock through short selling ETFs. The idea is that stocks in the intersection of several highly shorted ETFs are more likely to be the true targets of ETF short bets. We first validate our ETF-based short ratio by examine its correlation with hedge fund ownership. Our result shows that stocks which are heavily shorted via ETFs have significantly lower hedge fund ownership, suggesting that the measure does capture well the shorting demand from sophisticated investors.

Like I said, to a fucking tee. Only difference is that GME retains a obscenely high amount of institutional ownership. Look at this again:

>some hedge funds prefer using ETFs to short underlying stocks so that their rivals cannot easily detect their trading strategies.

Obscuring short positions, institutional infighting...sound familiar?

It means that a fair portion of the market can be expected to cash out early on (say the 1000-3000) range, if say 20% of the shorts were resolved in this range you're looking at the squeeze not cost a simple amount of say 30000 x shares outstanding and instead being a smaller amount overall while some serious risktakers will cash out at a higher amount and others will actually become bagholders.

Equally people besides shortsellers will be jumping into the market buying driving the price higher as well.
