None of the numbers that we are seeing right now imply that this is going to slowly sink to $20.

It's either going to very quickly go from $50 to $0 or squeeze. If I were you I'd sell half of whatever you have in GME and go in on GRT which will give you a 2x within a few weeks, then keep the rest in GME. The institutions have the collateral to hold indefinitely. Do you think these billion dollar companies don't know what they're doing? They got caught with their pants down on a fluke because someone paid attention, and they've covered after the 1800% squeeze. This was unprecedented and now it's over.

https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/02/02/bought-gamestop-stock-last-week-heres-your-best-ho/
>However, short sellers may have already mostly covered. According to a Bloomberg article citing data fromIHS Markit, only 39% of GameStop's float is now sold short. For perspective, it was over 100% short interest just last month as the squeeze started. This makes sense since prominent hedge funds like Melvin Capital Management have already announced they've covered their positions at a substantial loss.
>With each passing day, the possibility of a new high from a GameStop short squeeze becomes less likely.
>Consider that GameStop stock had a dirt cheap valuation prior to the squeeze because the business was struggling. For much of 2020, the stock traded below 0.2times trailing sales. Let's suppose that Cohen's plan works long term and GameStop starts regaining market share. Some of those sales could also have a higher profit margin thanks to its digital push. Therefore, it's not outrageous to think this stock could someday sustainably trade at a higher valuation. This and higher sales could push its market capitalization marginally higher than where it was last week.
>The point is, if you're hoping to recoup your losses in GameStop stock, Cohen's plan is one of the best chances for it to happen. But this will be a multi-year transformation. In other words, you could be waiting a long time just to reach your original cost basis.

>According to a Bloomberg article citing data fromIHS Markit, only 39% of GameStop's float is now sold short.
This is conveniently ignoring the 200% institutional hold? Care to explain how that is possible? Both cannot be true at the same time. That is leaving aside this figure does not match the current data after 9 Feb anyway which shows it is wrong.

The actual fundamentals of the stock are completely irrelevant to the squeeze situation, so I won't even bother on the latter part.

the short squeeze happened and it was combined with an overlapping pump and dump as retail frenzy started
now theres a few million baghodlers that got in at anywhere from 80 - 450 and those wont sell, rest of the shares are probably in instituational portfolios, ETFs or held by management and will be release during upcoming rebalancings, slowly moving the price down to its long term target of about 5-10

depending on whether the company manages to make a turnaround (unlikely, see kodak, blockbuster, etc. incumbents are ususally wiped out when their business model becomes obsolete) we might see a long term rise to 20 or 30

i still suggest you hold, just to have that nice red -90% in your portfolio, if you ever make a decent win in the stock market then maybe sell it, it will offset some of your taxes

>> No.28889827

>Accounts by market participants corroborate this conjecture: For example, MarketWatch reports that “One hedge fund with which Weinhoffer is familiar was struggling to borrow a stock and instead shorted an ETF that contained the shares, ... The manager then took long positions in all the other stocks in the ETF”. Barron’s recently runs a column piece titled exactly as “Synthetic Shorting with ETFs”. It points out that hedge funds frequently create synthetic shorting using ETFs, particularly when it is costly or outright impossible to borrow the target stock(s). In addition, some hedge funds prefer using ETFs to short underlying stocks so that their rivals cannot easily detect their trading strategies.

>Our empirical analyses suggest that directional betting, especially synthetic shorting, is an important component of ETF shorting activities. First, we document that shorting activity on the ETF rises with the difficulty of shorting underlying constituents. Specifically, ETF short interest is high when the demand for shorting the underlying stocks is high, when the lendable supply of underlying constituents is low, and when the cost of shorting the underlying stocks is high. When we proxy the level of short-sale constraint of constituent stocks using idiosyncratic volatility (Pontiff (2006)) and Amihud (2002) illiquidity measure, we find that ETF short selling is more active when the underlying stocks are less liquid or more volatile.7 These relationships are robust to controlling for ETF characteristics such as ETF size and turnover, and the intensity of operational shorting activities. It suggests that there is a (partial) substitution between stock-level shorting and ETF shorting, especially when an ETF’s underlying stocks are difficult to short.

>> No.28890096

>To the extent that short sellers use ETFs to express their bearish opinions on individual
stocks, stocks that are heavily shorted via their holding ETFs should expect to earn negative returns in the future. Thus, in the second part of our empirical analyses, we examine the informativeness of ETF-level shorting for future returns. As a first check, we examine the predictive relation at the ETF level. We find that ETF short ratio negatively predict future ETF returns, suggesting that a non-trivial fraction of shorting activity in ETF is driven by directional betting. However, since ETF shorting can also be used for synthetic shorting on individual stocks, one should be able to more reliably glean information from ETF shorting activities by aggregating ETF short interests to the stock level.
One of the key innovations of our paper is that we construct a short interest ratio for each stock from the short interests of all ETFs holding that particular stock. This measure, which we call the ETF-based short ratio, reflects the collective shorting demand of that stock through short selling ETFs. The idea is that stocks in the intersection of several highly shorted ETFs are more likely to be the true targets of ETF short bets. We first validate our ETF-based short ratio by examine its correlation with hedge fund ownership. Our result shows that stocks which are heavily shorted via ETFs have significantly lower hedge fund ownership, suggesting that the measure does capture well the shorting demand from sophisticated investors.

This describes the GME situation to a fucking tee. The only difference: while, the authors back up their claim that short selling ETFs usually yields downturn in the price movement of the target stock by stating that stocks like these usually have diminished "hedge fund" (i.e. institutional) ownership, this is not the case for GME (~200% institutional ownership).

This is what I really think is happening. Institutional infighting, just a couple of trillion dollar firms looking to eat up Citadel, Melvin, and other shorts. Given that Citadel alone owns 20% of the fucking market, I can't imagine the general market downturn we're in for once funds start liquidating their positions to buy GME. Buckle up.

Selling is literally the stupidest thing you can do. You would be selling at the bottom at a huge loss when it is expected to rise.

The only case where I think it is justified is if you need the money out so much you have no choice, or if you got in very early and so don't have much of a loss. Even then I'd say that's unwise.

Pretty much. The situation is effectively just holding until the shorts cave. As long as the price is maintained about the level where they can safely exit we're good.

It's honestly an ideal situation. Instead of the last few weeks where we have to nervously watch the price for fear of it tanking to market value and it all being over, now it seems institutions are artificially maintaining the price at 50 so we don't even need to worry. We just have to wait.

Quite a lot of reasons. Price movement doesn't match it, volume when considering the extent of retail involvement makes it unlikely, at the time it did not look like it was going to drop so it would have been a potentially suicidal play.

Following that, short interest and the extent of institutional ownership and now the XRT info all suggest that they have not covered the majority of their shorts.

Separately to this there is the level of botting/shilling and the general media presence/misinformation. Again, not something that happens when you are in a safe position.

There is simply so much suggesting that they didn't cover that it isn't really worth considering they did. Also, the institutions owning 200% did not do so with the intent of losing money, which again suggests we are not in a bad spot as we hold along with them.

Many board don't allow spoilers because they're often abused to play tricks like you wanted to do just now (not that I mind myself but mods hate fun). Only the boards who really need them because of their discussions dealing with stories (/a/, /v/, /tv/ to name a few) have them, though in the end that amounts to most of the popular boards.

I'm an /x/-phile and avid /d/generate who frequents /vg/. Calling me WSB shows how small minded you are and how little stock people need to put into your words to begin with.
But you enjoy this, it's why you keep coming back to shit on people. So, let's keep the game going kid.
Still waiting on that proof of yours, you know. The one where you don't pull out shit logic involving feefees? What, gonna go cry to your shill friends that "One GME Holder" just won't sell?
Please, you are more schizo than i am if you really attribute a concept like "gamburu" to just me and not all kaiji fans.

Hey guys just wanted to say I'm out
I can't stand the pressure and we just can't win against Melvin Capital and their business partners.
We're nothing but a bunch of kids with a hundred bucks and some delusions.
I kneel to the big players, they are true experts.
I take my 90% loss and I'm out of stock market for good.
That's all.
See ya.

By that logic all money in existence is money that could be given to Melvin. You have a strange vendetta about a company that has left this ballpark weeks ago. They aren't the only hedgefund, you know. Which is what I was getting at.

Yeah but 78% shorts owned is still owned by Melvin bro.
And combined with 200% owned by institutions we have a mathematical contradiction and you can't explain it.
And since you are a proud "Shill", i'm going to wager you believe melvin is out as much as you actually believe the narrative you are "paid" to do by your own word.
I'm calling your bluff, and i'm going to raise come tomorrow. Since we are below 50, ever so slightly. Easier to buy in.
You'll be fine with that riiiiight?
I'm just gonna lose mooooney, riiiiiiiiight?
Go on, laugh, buddy!
