Even though 3x ETFs have only been around 10 years or so, it's interesting to consider one could have emulated the strategy with a futures account going back decades. And if one had, the compound growth would have been legendary. Like all time great even compared to Soros and Buffett. Yet interestingly to my knowledge literally no one has done so. The only thing I can think is it takes such a supreme level of autism and high pain threshold to hold through the worst draw downs that no one has ever even tried. I've been reading a lot of literature to come up with something that will mitigate the draw downs and still claim the upside. Basically it has you holding the 3x ETF when the underlying is above the 200 day moving average and getting out when the underlying is below. The reasoning being volatility is what kills leveraged ETFs and volatility is highest when the underlying is under that 200 line. They backtested it to 1928 and it seems to work so maybe check it out

Ordinarily you are right, however it's a little different when dealing with leveraged ETFs. For instance, say you try to buy and sell SPY on the 200 day. As you say, you will just about break even. However, the difference here is when SPY goes under the 200 day, you would sell out of UPRO. And when SPY goes back above you would buy back into UPRO. If you compare the two charts you'll see that a lot of time when SPY crosses the 200 down then back up, it's at about the same price. However at the time of selling and buying UPRO, it will often be a significantly lower price when you get back in. The reason being is the volatility decay UPRO suffers being a 3x leveraged ETF. It's that decay that you are trying to avoid by selling out based on the underlying SPY crossing over the moving average. It's a subtle point but it does change the equation a bit. Check for yourself.
