generally speaking for the UK taxes aren't especially bad. there is no income tax on the first $17000, and then only 20% between $17k and $70k. There is national insurance but again is less in tax than what you guys pay in tax + out of pocket for healthcare/insurance/social security. Income tax does get steep if you have high income and the 20% VAT hurts, but overall it's not too bad, certainly not for the average wagie. And what you get for this is excellent public transport (londonistan resident), no out of pocket healthcare costs, and cheap university with decent grants. Capital gains is not too bad here either, say you cash out 6 figures from crypto you essentially pay a flat 20%, no matter the timeframe or number of trades.

There’s about £1800 left every month

Pension plan is taken care of before net income, so are medical & dental bills. If you have children you get £60 per week plus more to help with childcare should you need it. School fees are negligible and subsidised further for things like lunches if you’re poor.

It’s not a perfect system because people can really coast by in it (and they do) but it’s manageable desu. The biggest hurdle is getting the deposit for a house while you’re still young, but this seems to be the same issue everywhere

I booked a gp appointment before the pandemic and was seen in 2 weeks. I live in a major city. Also there is usually a system 1 day a week where you can show up and get and appointment that morning, or some have a system where you queue before the GP opens and be seen that morning.
