Ren works differently in that Ren "holds" the bitcoin in storage when you xfer to the wrapped one. The idea there is a potential to be scammed, I guess. The idea here is that the BTC is actually burned, giving no incentive for the scam, but it burns the BTC. It seems like an odd solution to the problem.

The issue with this (and that other people sense as well) is that at no point will their BTC be considered equal to an actual one because you're still getting a funny-money token in exchange and hoping that it remains pegged.

Because it can do everything that ETH can. That's the idea behind it. It's designed to be slightly less manipulative than something like Ren *could* be, but it does so at the expense of burning the BTC forever. It's probably the best solution to that problem, but it doesn't actually create anything better for the end-user, imo.

Be sent to someone as a bitcoin. You're just telling me this other thing you invented is worth as much as a bitcoin because you destroyed a bitcoin.

If I put a bitcoin wallet on a usb drive and burn it to ash then fingerpaint "1 AshedBTC" on a piece of paper it doesn't make that paper worth a bitcoin. I mean it can do things bitcoins can't like be handed to someone in the physical world and made into a paper airplane so you could argue its a better bitcoin but its still not a bitcoin anymore.
