Seems you have no concept of long term planning and risk/reward.
The reason he makes some money now is because there is no guarantee this is sustainable for more than a few months and is technically stealing the costs of the electricity he is using or his ROI would be shit.
He may get lucky but if he gets found out it's not impossible he would be asked to pay for the bill.

It really doesn’t take all that much time and energy to set up a small mining rig. He probably spent <30 hours on learning everything and setting it up. I’m sure you have “wasted” MUCH more time than that on things like vidya, tv, browsing 4chan, watching anime or a hobby project. And learning how to set up a mining operation is actually a valuable skill and makes you money (unlike most other hobbies).
Again, why do you assume that this project is all he has got going for him in life? I’m pretty successful in life, but I would set up a mining rig myself if electricity cost wasn’t too expensive in my country (already looked into it).
