I was a lead webdeveloper at a company where I pretty much handled every website, every client, and I programmed multiple apps for the "President" of the company who considered himself a programmer as well (he was a PHP hobbyist at best... yeah...)

He essentially spent all of his time making demands, having them met beyond his expectation, and then trying to tell me (and others) that I went about it the wrong way or "I would have done it differently" etc.

He was an asshole of epic proportions and I'm not exaggerating. His routine was to do rounds in the building and stress as many employees out as he could.

I was impervious to this because I keep a cool head which just caused him to press further.

Eventually I took him for all the $ I could and quit without notice.

Some people are just ASSHOLES, man - and when an employer treats you like shit despite your exceptional work/behavior it is often because they have deep, gnawing, subconscious guilt over how they got where they are in life. I saw him lie to countless clients as well as make me and other employees lie for him - he was a con-artist. These are the people who shoot themselves in the head at 55 after "earning" millions and ending up with no friends, no wife/gf (or fag bf) etc.

That's my input on this shit thread.

High school, in America at least, is just a clusterfuck. I remember being approached by parents and teachers around sophomore year, telling me that I seriously need to start considering what I want to "be" when I'm older.

By that, they of course mean to say "what are you going to major in and where?" In the 11th grade, I was asking teachers and coaches for letters of recommendation to universities (that I had already decided on). In my English class, we wrote college application essays for an assignment. In some home-economics-esque course (required class -- taught you to balance your check book and shit), each student had to give a presentation on what their career goals were. I took that the same year I was applying to colleges (11th grade), and some of my classmates were as young as 15.

It baffles the mind. I was dead-set on what school, major, and concentration I wanted, despite not even finishing Trigonometry yet. They just rush you into scrambling together a half-baked goal. No looking at the current and projected job market, no exploring different fields and opportunities, not even acquiring any skills -- you need to pick a college and major right-the-fuck-now.

If you're considering doing something else, you're treated like an outcast. Kids that had jobs lined up after HS had to take 1 or 2 classes their Senior year (the rest were "study halls"), and trade students spent half their day in a completely different building several blocks away.
