Bancor's IL protection is a ticking time bomb IMHO. As soon as the following two things happen with a single asset at the same time, it's over:
- the asset rises in price dramatically
- people want to all withdraw the asset at the same time
Then there will be lots of people whose IL insurance gets paid out in bnt (see pic related). They still want their asset back so they swap the bnt for the asset, leading to falling bnt prices. Falling bnt prices cause the exact same process to repeat with other pools (since all pools trade against bnt), depressing bnt prices even further, etcetera. It's potentially a death spiral.
I'll leave it as an excercise for the reader which token will most probably set this off in the near future.

Anyone who hasn't been in the pool for long enough is further disincentivized to unpool. A rapidly increasing price would also lead to increased volume and therefore fees, especially if the pool size actually shrinks as a result of our doomsday event.

I think your assumptions are flawed. Liquidity providers will all have their 100 days staggered, this will be one factor against your scenario of everyone pulling out together. Also, what would be the motivation to pull out your assets if they mooned? Outside of a smart contract bug making providers panic, I don’t see why providers would be rushing to exit all at once.

- Can it just sit there indefinitely? I don't have to re-stake at certain points? Those gas fees weren't nice.
- When staking BNT, it's best to just go for the highest return? I see OCEAN/BNT has a big APY and is protected. Any risk in switching?

you can just leave your BNT alone now. it will only cost you money to re-stake the rewards you accrue, so wait until it's a big enough rewards pile to make the gas fee worthwhile. switching to a different pool will cost you a few to remove the stake and place a new one... no way that's worth it in the short/medium term.

I thought about this. You aren’t taking into account what will happen if bnt is dumped on the market. This would cause the bnt price to drop so arbitrageurs will immediately buy up the bnt from cex’s to get vBNT which would be worth more than the bnt. So all the dumped bnt returns to Bancor where it will get staked and partially burned. It’s really genius when you start thinking about it.

All pools are safe. Stablecoin pools are the least likely to get extended for liquidity mining because they are not as efficient for the protocol as other TKN pools due to their pegged nature.
