Brainlet explanation:

https://twitter.com/DeFiFrog/status/1359268916799840256

Big brain explanation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbUqcbNqQ-Y
#1 IL protection. Not as impactful during a bull market but larger stacks looking generate revenue from providing liquidity will obviously want IL protection when things settle down or go south for a while.

#2 Single sided staking. Wanna stay all-in on your token of choice and still provide liquidity? Bancor is your guy.

#3 Vortex. You get vBNT from staking your BNT that you can swap for different coins if you think they will outperform BNT, then swap a portion of the tokens back to vBNT to unlock your BNT stake when you want to.

#4 Massive growth in TVL, #1 pool for locked Chainlink. Marketcap hasn't gone up proportionately. Sitting around 350m while competitors with inferior tech and higher swap fees sit at 10-20x that.

#5 Working demo on arbitrum testnet with 50x lower gas/swap fees.

#6 EOS bridge up and running, actively building a Polkadot bridge

#7 Sweet sweet passive income with insane APY% (for now). Tons of linkwhales chilling in LPs.

Soon you'll see. YOU'LL ALL SEE

Bancor's IL protection is a ticking time bomb IMHO. As soon as the following two things happen with a single asset at the same time, it's over:
- the asset rises in price dramatically
- people want to all withdraw the asset at the same time
Then there will be lots of people whose IL insurance gets paid out in bnt (see pic related). They still want their asset back so they swap the bnt for the asset, leading to falling bnt prices. Falling bnt prices cause the exact same process to repeat with other pools (since all pools trade against bnt), depressing bnt prices even further, etcetera. It's potentially a death spiral.
I'll leave it as an excercise for the reader which token will most probably set this off in the near future.

What makes you think the difference between BNT APY and staking APY will make people panic withdraw all at once? Anyone who hasn't been in the pool for long enough is further disincentivized to unpool. A rapidly increasing price would also lead to increased volume and therefore fees, especially if the pool size actually shrinks as a result of our doomsday event.

You hold the stake for 100 days and withdraw at 100% coverage. The protocol takes the hit for you. You get 100% of your stinky stake back + rewards. If the value of this stinky stack is lower due to sergay buying mcchickens however that is your own problem to take up with the serg. The protocol only cares for token amounts, not their dollar values. It ensures your tokens are safu, but their prices are just as safu or unsafu as they are in your coldwallet.

you can just leave your BNT alone now. it will only cost you money to re-stake the rewards you accrue, so wait until it's a big enough rewards pile to make the gas fee worthwhile. switching to a different pool will cost you a few to remove the stake and place a new one... no way that's worth it in the short/medium term.

I thought about this. You aren’t taking into account what will happen if bnt is dumped on the market. This would cause the bnt price to drop so arbitrageurs will immediately buy up the bnt from cex’s to get vBNT which would be worth more than the bnt. So all the dumped bnt returns to Bancor where it will get staked and partially burned. It’s really genius when you start thinking about it.
