You basically become an account and tax professional. You don't really care about what the CEO is memeing about or promising, you only care what is on the balance sheet. What is their cashflow, what are their liabilities, why are they distressed, will that improve, how likely are they to find refinancing, do they have any partners that might want to help them (competitors will want them to go bankrupt to buy up assets cheap ), what do they need to pay between NOW and when the bond matures,
are there legal disputes (likely from shareholders or business partners), etc.
The problem is that bond people are doing the exact same thing so almost always the answers to these questions will be uncertain and it becomes a game of probabilities if they are able to claw back from death's door (reflected in the junk bond price). Very rarely is there an arbitrage situation like in most stocks given the liquidity of the bond market. That said back in early March when a lot of bad bonds were being dumped in a panic there was a brief window to get junk bonds "cheap" relative to their actual financials.
