Martin Shkreli drops a black pill on a 24 year old white /biz/cel, tells him his 100k is nothing and he’s wasting his time looking at the stock market.

https://youtu.be/NABQKu3OX6U

Is Martin right? This jives with the advice every intelligent person I’ve ever known has given me, the most important thing you can do is get your INCOME up, then passively invest your income to become a multimillionaire. The best way to get your income up is through acquiring skills. This goes against the /biz/ philosophy, so who is right?

>> No.28321352

If you make less than a million dollars a year you simply are not worth talking to. Even Martin at his peak was a kid playing in the major leagues

I make 75k a year as an engineer, my brother is a dermatologist that makes 700k a year. I can’t keep up with him not matter how much I invest, he is making my yearly salary in like 6 weeks, he spent over a decade in school and training getting those skills. With more skills you can make more money in the marketplace, and even the best investors on planet earth can only make 15-20% yearly return annually.

Mostly.

He is right that $100k is fucking nothing. It sounds like a lot, but you will be shocked to see how quickly it goes. I lived a fairly frugal lifestyle last year with some expenses and I burned through about $20k in a year. That was even before this funny money fuckery that will cause inflation to skyrocket in the coming years. You have $100k in the bank and you might make it five years without "working", and then you will be broke and have no marketable skills.

You want to primarily invest in things that improve your year to year fixed income, be it job skills, licenses, connections, etc. Then you can supplement the gains you get from this with some passive investments that you let sit for 30 to 40 years. By the time you retire, you'll have a stupid amount of money if you have a diversified portfolio and money shouldn't be an issue for the rest of your life.

In your situation, as you said there is no way you can feasibly catch up to your brother. The only way is outsized returns (and thereby exposing yourself to greater risk) whether that's going levered long in crypto, starting a business, whatever floats your boat.
Think about it this way. If Elon Musk didn't risk it, he would've stuck his paypal money into Vanguard S&P 500 instead of starting TSLA/SpaceX. Not a great example obviously since he was born into a rich family and had lifelines, yada yada but you get my point.

Because you’d make much larger amounts of money getting small percent gains on huge sums of money than large percent gains on small sums of money.

It’s much more difficult to make 50,000% on a trade than it is to make 5%. If you’re managing a billion dollars at a hedge fund and make 5%, you just made 50 million dollars. If you are a minimum wage worker and are throwing all you can afford into an investment portfolio (say 300 bucks a month), even if it goes 5,000%, you’re still only sitting on $15,000.

Again, if you are capable of getting consistent, very large percentage returns, more power to you, but this doesn’t seem to be possible. Go back and read Link 2018-early 2019 threads, nobody was getting any returns at the time. Meanwhile, other coins and stocks and assets were getting large returns. What was the opportunity cost of sitting in LINK during that time period?

100k isn't a lot of money, but saying you shouldn't worry about investing it is retarded advice, since it requires minimal effort for huge returns. If you mean quitting your job and focusing purely on the stock market/crypto, then yes that is retarded though.

It is true sometimes with these people that have like <1k to invest, because even with a low skill manual labor job, you can make over 25k a year and invest at least 3-5k of that. And 100x'ing your 1k to reach 100k would be the same as reaching 10m by starting with 100k (obviously not exactly due to tax brackets).

Hes not wrong
$100k isn’t a lot of money and if you blow it on a bad bet it will take you a very long time to get it back if you’re making even “good” wages
Putting time into skill development is definitely worth it and you can’t save your way to wealth so having a high income is crucial.
That being said, investing/trading is in and of itself a skill. Other people probably aren’t going to be paying you for it but you can certainly use it to accelerate your net worth and potentially make a career out of it.
100k isn’t a lot in the context of 8% ROI each year but if you can put 100k into a 10x then yeah now we are talking some real money and getting “average” returns on 1mil isn’t so bad either, especially when you’re young.
The other thing to consider is that we only have so much capacity for skill development and it varies from person to person. Sure if you have a 140 IQ and you’re great with finance you can go kill it in investment banking. Some of us are borderline retarded and it’s a better strategy to just ride the coat tails of good traders/investors.
I’ve made some good investments and I make a pretty average salary.
There’s lots of people who’ve been able to leave the jobs they hate by developing their skills in the investing world through different sorts of investments so I think it’s inaccurate to say it shouldn’t be done.
At the same time I think it’s very easy to burn all your cash in the stock market so his point still stands.
TLDR: do both

$100,000 is enough for an education, so Shkreli is trying to exploit this man for "society" or whatever. They got my dad too, so I ended up wasting so much buttfucking time. You can't get a job or develop a personality at 16 if your dad keeps autistically screaming "SCHOOL SCHOOL SCHOOOOOOOL!!!" and even beats you for not SCHOOL. Just remember that Shkreli was friends with the likes of the NAFTA Clintons, aka, "If immigrants don't come, who will clean our toilets for pennies?".

That being said, investments ARE a risk. And the time you have to wait to get to a milli is potentially YEARS. Years that you could have spent developing new skills and finding the best version of yourself. Years you could have spent socializing and traveling. If you are diversified in good legitimate projects and long-term holds, the risk of losing your money is basically nil (at least for me). I wouldn't care enough to do a "lower risk" option that is in reality similar risk but with lower return. Regardless you should never invest with money you can't lose obviously. At around 3m, I would probably withdraw 2m of it and put it an ETF just so I have some safety net.

The problems is that unlike workers of the past, people nowadays are scared to ask for a reduction of labor hours, even though Keynes predicted we would work 15 hours a week in 2030 due to automation. Unemployment due to COVID is off-the-chart, yet people are still expected to work 40 hours a week. It's simply absurd.
I believe a huge part of /biz/ simply want to get rich to escape the cage and have more free time, but what Martin was hinting at is that you will never make huge money for a lifetime if you know don't know anyone in NYC and don't have access to a Bloomberg terminal. You might instead burn your dopamine receptors on trading apps instead of focusing on your career and skills, which is what is realistically sustaining most people day-to-day, and he has a point here.
However, Martin Shkreli is also a massive faggot rotting in prison, so I would take his opinion with a whole saltshaker. It's not a waste of time to learn how to invest and what the execs of the companies are doing with the money they are extracting from your labor.

It becomes exceptionally harder the more you make both from a liquidity and risk perspective. Throwing $1-10K in meme coins and letting that ride up to 6 figures is not hard. Once you approach 7 figures though you naturally want to diversify into other assets like stocks. Very few people hold onto these meme coins that can drop 50% in a day once they become worth >$500K. I know some do, and congrats to them.

I get and agree with the principle of what he's saying. You're just misrepresenting it horribly.

100k is what the average worker makes that in just 2-3 years. In the practical sense if you're hoping to turn 100k into a literal fortune you either have to know for a fact that some altcoin is going to blow up, or you have to concoct some genius business idea that will make you a millionaire or billionaire years down the road, a la bezos. Both options leave the very real opportunity of you losing it all anyway.

His point isn't that 100k is "nothing", but rather that having that much money alone is no path to being wealthy. You've got to focus on what you're good at and channel your income into sound investments if you want to gradually get rich in a way that doesn't risk losing it all.

The funny thing is when you have time to pay attention and learn about markets its actually easy to make money in them. Which is probably martins real point, if people just made money from investing they wouldn't need to hire money managers and investment guys to steal their gains and give them 5% per year in return, so he wants you to go back to your cage and stop threatening his entire industry with redundancy by being a self reliant capitalist instead of a good got consooooomer.

In fact I had some connections through my professor to random companies I have no desire to work for. I just want to do my own research while living upper middle class but that requires money. At least 70,000$ a year where I live. Progress is being stifled because of this. I'm disappointed in my graduate thesis because it doesn't represent what I want to do. For example I want to work on algorithms that deal with factorization using new mathematical techniques. Will it lead to anything? No probably not. The only people who get to do risky research are established professors. Like Andrew Wiles would never had proved Fermats Last Theorem as a grad student because he had to delve into the unknown and universities hate the unknown.

>A federal judge has rejected convicted pharmaceutical executive’s Martin Shkreli’s second request to be let out of prison early, showing skepticism about his claim in court papers that mental health issues have weakened his immune system and made him more susceptible to contracting the coronavirus.

my point is that when you want to learn something, you dive in, and the best environment to dive in is a challenging one >>>so long as you can maintain momentum<<< and continually learn
if you're doing it to "make money" right away, its not good to rely on it if you don't know what you're doing yet, and you may lose out on money you need since there is opportunity for loss

if you want to learn to make money investing, you play the game of investing

shkreli is offering his opinion which is fine. people should develop skills anyhow
but you're never going to learn ANY type of skill if you don't involve yourself

>Why should the best fighter take it easy on a person just cause they’re clueless enough to jump into the ring with them, the market doesn’t care
and it shouldn't
i never said you should be coddled or baby

if you want to turn a pup into a wolf, you put it in the wolf den
when the thing you are learning is about competition, then you want to be put in challenging environments
you'll never get a feel for the market if you dont play it

Hes right 100k is nothing on the market and a waste of time but that doesnt mean 100k is nothing. That amount of money is life changing for 99% of people

That anon isn't wrong about not being able to catch up with his brother's net worth though.
There's a tipping point where after a certain amount of yearly income is made, a person multiplies not only their spending options but also multiplies their chances of making substantial amounts of money through investments.
And obviously when you have more money, smaller % gainz which may not make a difference to the average person's life can afford someone with a substantial amount of money an uncalculatable amount of things or options for further investments. Which would likely only further increase the gap in their disparity.
